i have been doing some research trying to decide on what my first slip joint should be. i reread my copy of Steven Dick's "The Working Folding Knife" and have decided on the classic large stockman as my first.

I'm having trouble finding the knife i want though so i need your help. I pretty much dead set on black micarta (preferrably linen) as the handle material. i'm wanting a high end production knife but i can't find one with micarta.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks in advance

Can't seem to find any production stockmen that are of the large variety with micarta handles, but there is a readily available Rough Rider 262, which is about 3-1/4" closed. Then there's also the Camco Workhorse Medium Stockman, which is about 3-5/8" closed. The Camco would most likely be more difficult to get since Camillus closed its doors back in 2007.

Buck does on in black thermal plastic, also Case does a black G-10. I see you said a high end production, have you considered talking to some of our resident knife makers? You might get a custom for not much more.

I own a bunch of stockmans.....

....and Case large stockmans in CV steel are some of my favorites.

Are you wanting micarta for the black color?

Here is a pic of my preferred stockmen.

You can get cv steel spooky sharp. These two here are downright nasty sharp.

Camco is also made in China or was just before Camillus closed. I have used a RR micarta stockman for three years every day but it is a smallish stockman. $10.00 will let you try it out.

Well, to answer the OP's question, I don't know of any production stockman with Micarta scales.

The available scales are made of bone, wood, stag, horn, celluloid, delrin, or various composites such as the yellow ones used by Case.

Then there was last year's series from Case with G10 scales (mentioned by hlee above), and one of the knives in that series was a medium stockman with stainless steel blades.

In my view, the "high end" large stockman knives available today are:

1. The Case large stockman Model #6275 with chrome vanadium (CV) steel blades (available today only with "amber bone" handle scales), and

2. The Queen large stockman Model #9 - or the even larger Queen Cattle King stockman Model #49 - with D2 steel blades.
(Both are available with either "amber carved stag bone" or birdseye maple handle scales.)

Also, Great Eastern Cutlery (and their Tidioute and Northfield brands) makes excellent knives with 1095 carbon steel blades.
Though they don't offer a classic large stockman, they have many models which are very similar.

thanks for all the replies.

i was wanting the micarta for looks more than anything. i normally go with custom knives but i didn't want to wait on this one if ya know what i mean;)

those GEC look really nice. looks to be very high quality. i guess i will decide on another handle material at this point.

Also a #9 Stockman in Black Cherry Delrin is hard to get!

Crossada, email me at fred@knifeoutlet.com. Let me know whether you want a trapper or a stockman. I'll send you one for free with a micarta handle and 440A stainless blades. Be sure to include your address.
wow! i have heard of the kindness in this subforum and now i know it's true. thank you very much but i can't accept that esp. since i have a slipjoint on the way but really i do appreciate the offer. i think i'm going to have to hang around here more often:)

i chose to go with the GEC whittler instead with stag handles. the quality looked to be top notch and the reviews i found in here were always good too. i like 1095 steel so that was a plus.

i didn't see too much difference between the whittler and stockman patterns other than the spring arrangement and the location of the blades?
i will post my thoughts about it when i get it.

also i want to thank everybody again. hopefully i can pay you all back some day:thumbup:
