Doh! Defective Poliwog?

There is a metal piece between the ball and the spring. It's almost like a fat nail because it has a narrower part that goes inside the spring. There is a small cutout at the back of the U-shaped hole the ball moves within, and this cutout allows the piece pushing against the ball to slide back enough to let the blade go through its full closing motion.

That little extra cutout is not centered on the spring mechanism. It is closer to the blade than the spine. On one side, that piece between the spring and ball scrapes against the corners created by the cutout area. If I rotate the tube piece it works OK (this just barely makes enough difference, you can't tell by looking), but it slowly works itself around and starts scraping again. I think it was in a good position when new, but now it wants to scrape.

Anyone else have a Poliwog with an off-center cutout (not the large U-shape one, but the smaller one at the back of the U)?

The nail piece only just barely needs to go past this cutout. You might not notice without looking close, but it's enough to make it stick sometimes.

just send it to the W&R departement of Spyderco, they will replace your knife if found defective or off specs.

Don't try to fiddle with it, it will destroy your warranty.

Spyderco has a top notch W&R policy.

Carl64,
We haven't seen what you're describing. If you would like to send it in to W&R, let me know. I will have it passed on to Eric and he'll take a look.

Um, Let's pretend it's too late to send it in.

But here's another question. How many washers should this thing have? It opens smooth enough, but there was only one washer, on the clip side of the blade. I thought for sure I must have lost it, but I was sitting on a bed when I took the blade off and I looked all over for it. I looked at the blade, and I notice there is a washer-sized outline (from slight rubbing and grease stain) visible on one side, but on the other side there is no obvious outline and the scratches are not confined to any washer-sized area.

Carl64,

It should have two washers. If you would like to have it repaired at this point, please contact Amanda at 800/525-7770 x 255 (M-F 06:30am - 3:30pm MDT/MST) .

Please remember that we are always willing to look at, address and resolve any problem you may be having with one of our products. However, in order to maintain your warranty, it is important that you not attempt to resolve it yourself.
