Dragonfly Question

I have not had the opportunity to handle a carbon fiber clad Dragonfly yet. Are they as as strong (no handle flex) as the regular Zytel version?

Thanks,

Jon

The carbon fiber is quite abit stronger than zytel. On the dragonfly, I prefer all steel. The CF is very nice but the steel looks classy also and you can have engraving done on it if you wish. If I were going to buy a dragonfly I would go ahead and get cf or steel instead of zytel. Dont get me wrong. The zytel is fine, but you can get the all steel one for not much more. I think all the bladeforums cf dragonflys are gone so Im not sure how much you can find those at now. Suggested retail is quite abit more than the zytel or steel versions.

I know this sounds trite, but I think the DragonFly is the best kept secret of the Spyderco line. Make this knife 1.5-2.5 inches bigger and you have a modified Native with a flat grind!

OK, ok, I'll put down the wish list. It's rude of me...

The main reason I was interested in the CF Dragonfly was the ATS-55 steel (much better than the AUS-8 I hear). BUT, I just re-read the description at knifecenter.com. I didn't realize the steel handled Dragonlfy was also ATS-55!

I'll buy the steel handled dragonfly and save the extra $$ for the CPM-440v small Centofante. :-)

Kysa - Not sure, but I think you just described the Calypso Jr.

I have mentioned this in a different thread, but IMHO my thoughts are that the Calypso Jr. and the Dragonfly are very much alike.

I don't like carrying "large" knives; my normal dress seems to dictate nothing larger than the Native. But... I have both the steel and micrata handled Calypso Jrs. and three versions of the Dragonfly: Zytel, SS and CF handles. For pairing knives, the two SS versions look good and the micarta Calypso Jr. goes well with the CF Dragonfly.
Ergonomics are a little different between the two models obviously, but visually they are very similar, at least to me!

Now, if I could ever get a CF Calypso Jr., that would make my day (week, month, year)!

BTW, I know that the prevailing wisdom seems to be that a flat grind is preferable to a hollow grind both for use and visual appeal, but I personally like the hollow grind. Mind you, this is a visual thing, but in the types of use that I put my knives to, I can't discern a noticeable difference between the two. My five year old Zytel-handled Dragonfly has the hollow grind but the SS and CF have the flat. (Since I havent' seen a Zytel 'fly lately are they now all flat grind???) Of course, my Micarta Calypso Jr. has the flat with my SS having the hollow grind.

Too bad I can't get those reversed so they look even more like pairs! Oh well, love 'em all anyway.
