I need to make a flat bottom hole in steel like you would with a forstner bit it wood. I don't have a mill but I do have a drill press. My question is can I use milling cutters in my drill press for this purpose and if so, what type cutters do I need? Or, any other methods you know about to accomplish this flat bottom hole would be appreciated. Thanks for any help.

Yes you can use end mill cutters but a better way is to get a botteming bit from Brownells. I'm sure Mcmasters, J&G and maybe Enco carry them also but I know Brownells does.

What are you doing, mounting a scope on that knife?:D :D

Here is a Trick That I Use Drill a Little Smaller with a ''Normal Drill Bit then Change to a End Mill to ''Ream it Flat'' Try It !! Good Luck !!

If you go with the mill bit, use a 4 flute centercutting end mill, you can cut downward with those, as well as laterally. A 2 flute will work if you don't have the 4. Drill the hole first with a drill bit, stopping short of the depth you need. Finish with the end mill.

Clamp the work SECURELY before using the end mill or you may get hurt or screw up your workpiece.
End mills aren't like drills-they don't center themselves.
