Okay so thanks to my IWB carry of my MOD Mark I during the summer it has developed some rust on the thumbstuds. so I need some advice.

This happened to me, less than a month ago when received it in the mail, it had taken a bath during the shipping and took a few days to reach me...

the best option is to take it off (the hole may have rusted too) and depending if it is superficial or not, you'll remove it acordinglly. I had to separate the two parts with with pliers, and later used scotch brite scrub pad (the green ones) and soap, since it was only superficial from a few days it came off easily.
Later dried and cleaned it with tuf-cloth, and since then it seems fine!

The problem was to put the tumb stud in place again, they became a bit loose within each other and with some spacing beetween the hole, I glued them with some odinary glue until I find a better option... so any ideas will be welcome to glue this would be welcome! (I even opened a thread here, but unfortunately nobody replied)

Your best bet might be to just replace the thumb studs. www.knifekits.com sells several thumb studs. You might want to search around for other suppliers though, I think knifekits.com has kinda high shipping charges, especially for something so small. Or just order enough other stuff to make the shipping charge worth it. ;)

You'll probably need calipers to measure the hole on the knife or the old thumbstud to make sure you get ones that will fit and not have any play. Most of the ones I've seen screw together, so loc-tite is probably a good idea to keep them from loosening up over time.

Darklight, are the originals threaded or are they just pressed together? If they're pressed together then squeezing them in a vice might do the trick.

I've removed rust successfully with Flitz metal polish and q-tip. It works very well.

Mine were very stuck, so I guess they were heat pressed. They are not threaded.

I tought about squeezing them, but with stuff that usually I start doing brute force with, they usually end up in the garbage due to excess and some venting from not working... :grumpy:

An excellent metal polish/tarnish remover for surface rust is Tarnite. A featured ingredient is oxalic acid, which chemically digest oxides, and thus is very effective for removal of surface rust. Some Ace Hardware Stores stock it, but you may have to google for internet vendors.

It's no help at all for rust-pitting damage. Metal-removal is the only remedy for removing those pits.

Hope this helps!

If worse comes to worse, just send it back to MOD. I have a CQD Mark II and I had to send it back twice. Both times, I had quick return less then a week the first time and the 2nd time was back within 3 days of being sent. MOD customer service is pretty good IMO.

BTW maybe try some Break Free CLP and give it a good bath in it?

Yes, I must say that blackhawk has the best customer service anyone will ever find!

Once I requested them where I could buy 2 straps that I lost from a blackhawk vest, they just asked for address. 2 weeks later I received a box in the mail (I'm from Europe), but.. with 2 PAIRS in it!! No money, no questions, nothing - just plain superb service.
