Dull Fang

I'm having problems getting my Fang neck knife to take a decent edge. It arrived moderately sharp, but as sharp as say, a spyderco would. I don't own a really good sharpening system I have some cheap pocket size sharpener, and I have a couple DMT diamond hones that don't help. I'm pretty new to knives and would appreciate any recomendations about which sharpening system I should get and how to get an edge on this particular knife

My answer to this question is to get a Spyderco Sharpmaker. It is a very good way to get knives sharp. Low learning curve.

Here is a link to it:

Sharpmaker

It isn't the least expensive out there, however, it is one of the best IMHO.

I have it and use it on all my knives.

I've used both the Sharpmaker & a Lansky kit to keep a decent edge on my Fang. Invest in a good sharpener- it will keep you happy & your knives sharp. Gives you something to do during stupid sit-coms.

Assuming you know how to use a manual sharpener to sharpen a knife (it's a learned skill, so don't take it as an insult by any means!), I've found the edges on the Fangs to be a little thick. I thinned mine out just a bit and the difference was amazing. I think most of the Fangs are 1095, which is a great steel and should be pretty easy to shrpen and keep sharp. Try thinning the edge out a bit.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I went out and got a lansky sharpening system. My fang is now sharp enough to shave. I currently have a hairy right arm and a neary bald left arm, from testing knives! I've always been able to keep a working edge on a knife, but I've almost never had one sharp enough to shave till now, now I can shave with every knife I own. I'm amazed by what a difference it makes.
