I'm a novice maker, and I'm setting up a small shop in my basement. I've got a Bader III variable speed grinder, and a Reliant 1hp dust collector. My question.... the DC unit is separated from the grinder at opposite ends of a 12x12 room. the total run of the 4" pvc pipe is just under 30 ft. Is this long enough to avoid fires in the DC, or should I consider putting in another stage, perhaps with some water deflection.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Fire should not be a problem, however; 30' is a long way to exhaust. You loose a lot of power from static resistance, so you will need to check the exhaust lne to make sure it doesn't plug up. Also, be aware that many of the materials used in knife making are toxic as Hell, and will pass right through the bag on a collection system If at all possible, put the collector bag outside.

I do lose some power at 30ft of pipe, but I wanted to try to keep the DC at the opposite end of the room, I was thinking that the long run would give some cooling down time.
the room is 12x12, and there really isn't a way for me to put the DC outside. With a 1hp DC, do you think 30' is too long? I could move it closer, though it's inconvenient.

If you havn't put it in already, make sure you have static grounding protection with the PVC pipe. Metal dust can be explosive, especially when suspended in rapidly moving air.

I have the grounding kit here..... and I'll install it this weekend. I wanted to make sure my pipe layout was working ok.
