Hey people...anyone got some info/experience with the new DVD Recorder out there? I've been thinking about picking one up for my PC but have a few questions. First of all, have they been standardized? Meaning, do they pretty much work in any regular DVD system? Second, how is the copyright protection on DVD's nowadays? Not that I would ever indulge in any kind of copyright infringement or anything, but I'd love to make backups of my DVD's--some of them anyway since I have a tendency to scratch them up. As I know next to nothing about these newfangled devices I would appreciate any info. Thanks.

I have the Pioneer DVR 103/A03, which, in fact, is the same as the Apple Superdrive. I haven't heard of any copy protection yet, but here's an interesting article on CD copy protection: http://www4.tomshardware.com/storage/02q2/020617/index.html.

As far as standards, if you stick to DVD-R, you should be able to play your DVDs in just about any DVD player. DVD+RW might be more problematic. The Pioneer does not do DVD-RAM, but does do CD-R and CD-RW, if you don't already have a CD burner.

A coworker has the Panasonic DVD burner, which has DVD-RAM but does not burn CDs. I've played a DVD that he made from a MiniDV camcorder in my DVD player.
