OK, at one time I had 3 functional VCRs. Now, one functional, one dying, and one dead.
I'm likely going to buy a DVD recorder.

Looking at these things, it's apparent that as you go slightly up the price scale, you get a digital TV tuner incorporated. Does this mean I should be able to watch one TV program while recording another? (We have Charter cable with the digital decoder)

The particular unit I'm looking at is a Panasonic at about 229.00; that's about as much as I'd be able to spend at present. Don't need a lot of bells and whistles, and we are still using a standard TV, not HD or anything.

MW, my personal choice was to go with a media pc that has a dvd burner and also a tv tuner. I'm on cable internet anyway so I didn't have to change anything, just let the pc run some scans and now it has the same capabilities as a dvr. I can save any show or movie I want and then when I get enough to fill a disc, I burn it and I have Lightscribe so I can even make a label on the disc. Just something to consider. Oh yeah, Windows Vista Ultimate aint as bad as folks think it is!!

Does your question mean:

1) Can I watch a cable TV program while recording another channel off cable or

2) Can I watch a recorded TV program while recording another channel off cable?

Its been a while since I studied these things but last I knew 1) above would require two tuners, so if your TV has a tuner and its wired right then yes. If 2) above I’m not sure but if the DVD recorder has a hard drive for storage (like TIVO), as opposed to just burning DVD’s, I would think it could.

I’d go to the Panasonic web site and see if you can download the manual for that particular model. Then start reading.

Also the AVS forum is filled with folks that live and breathe this stuff. AVS has a subforum (named video components) just for DVD recorders.
