I bought some dark brown RIT dye at wallyworld yesterday. I was wondering if I need to follow the instructions on the bottle or do something else for the sheath and the tweener scales. i was also wondering if the black tweener scales are dye-able also. thanks guys.

I don't think zytel is dyable, but it's dura-coatable! For the sheath, I believe someone (forgot who) found that alcohol based leather dye works best.

I think zytel can be dyed, but not to the same results as the sheath. I would think that the peanut-butter scales would dye better than the black scales, but I am no expert by any means.

I dyed mine. You want to do it in a pot of almost boiling water on your stove, so reduce the dye quantity accordingly. I did mine dark green and in less than a minute they were almost black. Also, I'd suggest running some string through one of the holes so you can drop them in and take them out at the same time to get a consistent color.

With black scales, you're already saturated on color. I can't see it working at all, unless it just takes on a hint of the color you are using. If you want darker brown, you should do the PB scales.

Here's how mine turned out: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/947399-BK15-is-in-with-Midnight-OD-grips!

I think, just like the sheath, it is dyed before it is formed, making dying it nearly impossible, but the sheath was made into fibers instead of slabs, therefore can take some sort of dye, and the fact that the material isn't at all the same (aside from both being plastic in origin). My point is that zytel is not a fabric, and not designed for possible aftermarket dying.

It works Oxide. It works well, you just have to start with a lighter color than you want to end with, so the black ones are not going to work. The brown ones will take on color very easily.

If Kabar made white scales, I'd be all over them. It'd be great for customizing the regular or shorts for your own look.

Ok, I figured because it's plastic and not porous what-so-ever it wouldn't take to zytel, or grivory for that matter.

I used Fiebings Black Leather Dye on my sheath. Works great. Just give it a day, day and a half to completely dry and feel normal again.
