Yesterday knifemaker Randy Schmoker who lives in the bush off the Tok Cutoff stopped by and picked up some fossil whale bone and mammoth ivory.I read in the news this afternoon that the earthquake that hit here this after noon turnd his shop upsidedown. It seems to have knocked his band saw over and tossed his 150 LB anvil across the room. All the kids were over and my wife was frying chicken. When the earthquake hit we all went outside and watched the cars and trees rock and shake. In my shop I had a few things fall off shelves but there was no real damage. It was a strange feeling.I guess tonight I am just thankfull.

I'm thankful too Chuck. Somehow news of your exciting potential tragedy did not reach Iowa. I hope everything stays put for a while.

Thank goodness everyone is safe.

I'm so sorry to hear about his shop...what a mess, and what a chore to put it all back in order.

Just the thought of the possible damage and task of moving/fixing the hammer makes me shudder.

I was grinding a blade in my shop about a year ago when I lost total control, and then felt the floor swaying underneath me. Turned out to be an earthquake. That's one super scarey feeling!

Please send our regards :)

It seems that nature has a knack for shaking us up every now and them. Given the magnitude of the quake I was suprised by news reports that there was little damage overall. Not so lucky in Italy or the California Interstate.

Hey Chuck,
Do you know Randy Schmoker very well? I saw his profile in Blade a few issues ago, and I asked my grandparents, I think I am related to the guy, My mom's maiden name is Schmoker, and there aren't a whole lot of Schmoker's around. I beleive he is my Grandpa's brothers, son. IF I remeber right, so it's not like we are closely related, but I thought it was kind of neat anyway. So if you see him again please ask him if he has relatives in North Dakota.
thanks

What's really amazing is the quake was over a 7 pointer and there was only one person injured and no fatalities!
Sad it wreaked havoc on Randy's shop but it sure was a blessing it hit out in the boonies!
Glad to hear he and his family are all well!

Kyle, Randy only makes it to Fairbanks every couple of years. If his phone number is in that Blade profile I am sure he would be glad to hear from you.The Tok Cutoff where he lives is the only road in the state that is still closed.
This earthquake was different than any I had ever felt.I guess because it was so shallow it felt like the house was a boat and we were riding on waves.Fairbanks is only 90 miles from the epicenter but we are sitting on one of the worlds largest gravel deposits and I am sure it absorbed some of the shock.

Glad to hear that everybody is well and safe in both families,Sorry to hear about his shop though. That would be a pain,Any time you have to fix and re work the shop is a pain and down time you could be having fun making knives.

Akivory,

I am sorry about your friend.

However, I am happy to see you here. I have been wanting to get back with you for a couple months but lost your phone number. I am wanting to try some mamoth - a couple scales worth, enough for a hunter size D'Holder design.

Email me with your phone number please: rlinger1@netzero.net

Thanks and best of luck to all you and your friends there.

Roger

Chuck,

Great. If I'm not here at the time you call be sure to mention what would be a good time for me to call you back (your time zone) and be SURE to leave your number.

Thanks you, Roger
