You hit the nail on the head. It is that easy. No excuse to have a dull knife with a spyderco sharpener around. It is all I use. I am going to pick up the diamond sticks this weekend at the local gun and knife show. :D

Hand it off to one who has some years on the stones andwatch carefully, or

Buy a sharpmaker and watch the video, then you are good to go.

seriously, learn freehand. it might take a little longer than a system will to learn(I can teach in 30-45min to anyone freehand). Touchups are a breeze... grab a stone or sandpaper, and hit it for a few strokes each side each way.

my stones might weigh a little more in my bag than the 204 when I'm in the bush, but try and give me something I can't sharpen(serrations CAN be done on a stone, though not 100%).

Sharpmaker is great, but learn free hand. You may need to sharpen your knife when your on the other side of the country while your 204 is at home. You can also move metal quicker in my experience, with a stone over a 204.

I've gotten great results from the Edge-Pro Apex that I recently bought. It's not cheap, but I've had the best luck with that system. I've tried the Lansky and the Sharpmaker and I've even tried free hand but I haven't been able to beat the consistant and polised edges I get from the Apex.
