Gurkha House has formed an alliance with Educate The Children, a charity that works in rural Nepal. The US base of operations is in Ithaca, NY.

We've begun our support by donating some of the extra space in the khukuri boxes, where we have begun enclosing brochures and newsletters from the charity. I hope you all don't mind us doing this, but we wanted to start taking a more active roll in helping out in Nepal.

You can visit our ETC page at this address:

Of course, as time goes by, we will be doing more with the charity. In fact, they will be the recipient of the proceeds from the auction of the WWIII prototype khukuri and sheath, which should happen in the near future.

I'm sure that the kamis and the people of Nepal will appreciate this, and I'm also sure that nobody will object to this, since its for such a good cause.

Craig, perhaps when you visit Nepal you can explore the possibility of establishing a way that we forumites can get more directly involved in aiding the Nepalese, especially the kamis and their families.

Steven: You are one step ahead of me! I had been thinking about that, and what I want do do is as follows:

Maybe I'd set up a "donations" page on the site where the kamis pictures, names, historys, etc would be summarized. Donations could be made by credit card, and we would forward the money to Nepal with each order. Lalit would use the money explicitly for the kamis (whatever they needed).

You know, when the per-capita income of the average joe over there is about $250.00, your idea could definitey change the lives of a lot of families.

And of course, buying khukuris also helps in a way that is philisophically more palletable to me (instead of donations). That's why I've always tried to keep my prices low - to encourage more sales.

I'm paying a bit more for our khukuris now, and it's by choice. Since I have been demanding better and better quality standards, I felt it only fair to "raise the pay" of the kamis a bit.

You'll see a bit of a price hike on the new Ang Kholas and the Aluminum WWIIs, and our standard models might go up a few bucks (not much though), but rest assured that a substantial portion of this money is going into the kamis hands, not just mine or Lalit's.

Also, when I go over, I'll be taking a bunch of stuff along for the kamis - shoes, shirts, and other basic essentials.

Craig, I, for one, am happy to pay a little more for GH khukuris in order to get a better product and, at the same time, benefit some very poor people. And I'm sure that most other forumites feel the same way.

Actually, if and when I raise my prices (probably sometime in the future due to miniscule rises in cost of living), it will NOT be to absorb the cost of supporting ETC.

And when we get to Nepal, we will definitely start a program to assist the Kamis' families. I'm not sure how to do it, but I'm open to suggestions.

And BTW: If anybody wants to support ETC on their own, they do accept one-time donations.
