Hello everyone. I frequent the Balisong forums here at BF but figured you guys would be able to better answer my questions.

I'm very interested in learning the fine art of being a bladesmith. My experience is limited to repairing balisongs and sharpening. So how would I go about it? My resources are few, but my ambition is great. School? Apprenticeship? Out of a book?

I really appreciate any help.

Thanks guys!

my resourses were few when i started a little over four years ago. i bought tim McCreight's book. bought all my first tools like file's butane, torch, odds of stuff for handles at weekend yard sales. i anealled one file to file it with another.you get the picture, anyway i have never looked back. i am a stock removal maker that has been fulltime for about two and a half years. i admire forging and use damascus but at 42 years of age i can't take the sound of the hammer, hurts big time! to much rock&roll and pistol shooting i guess. another good book is by bob loveless, How To make knives. Good Luck

Go to http://pub4.ezboard.com/ftheneotribalmetalsmithsfrm?page=1 and start reading. Then ask lots of questions.
That will get you started and give you an idea of what you need to do. Then just start doing it. It's easier than it sounds.
Also, seek out local blacksmiths even if they don't make knives. They have a lot of things in common with what you want to do (though the local blacksmith and I are at a lot of the same auctions, and he keeps telling me to stay away from high-carbon steel.

Hey, thanks a lot everyone! I'm off to check out your links and suggested books. And I just at this very moment remembered that I know a blacksmith... GREAT!
