Ek Knives: will the marque return?

John Ek gained fame in WWII for his practical fighting knives. He died on 21 October 1976.

The Ek Commando Knife Company, managed by Vincent M. Signorelli produced a popular line of fighting knives in the great Ek tradition during the late 80's and early 90's. Personally I have models I-5 (customized by the Richmond, VA factory custom shop), S/F-6 and BTB.

BlackJack acquired Ek during the early 90's and then went belly up under circumstances that did not endear their management to many.

I have no idea what the legal status is of the Ek tradename and designs at this point. I do know John's son Gary continues as an independent maker in Florida. He operated out of St. Augustine in the late 80s and subsequently relocated to Miami.

I've always felt that the dagger and bowie designs were inherently practical and attractive. Further that their demise and lack of availability has been a most unfortunate loss.

Does anyone have any idea what the current legal status is of this grand marque? Anyone know what became of Vince Signorelli? Is he still active in the industry? I certainly enjoyed my exchanges by snail mail with him in '90 and '91. Am I alone in wishing for a new quality production of these designs in CPM 420V, CPM 3V, BG-42, VG-10, or Talonite? Wouldn't that be a grand event?

I agree that the loss is an unfortunate one. I've always kicked myself for not buying one years ago when they were pretty inexpensive for the quality they represented. But, yipes, thinking of one in VG10 or another steel is a truely intriguing vision.

Bob,
I could kick myself....a few weeks ago there was an EK FB on Ebay, good condition for $7. I got outbid at the last minute but didn't pursue it since I wasn't that familiar with them. This blade was 50 years old. I should have went after it. The final was only $15 (egads). Nice stag horn handle. Oh well....

Live and learn, right?

Greg,

A "real" John Ek 50 years old with stag handle???? Frankly, (and I have an old Ek catalog as well as his "Silent Partner" booklet autographed by his son) it doesn't sound like anything John Ek made. If you get back on eBay and find the closed auction, send me the reference number. I'd like to check it out and let you know if it was a misrepresentation like I think. Old "John Ek" knives usually go for $250 and up.

To all:

Neither Greg nor I could find that closed listing on eBay that he referred to. But ironically I found that there are some nice Richmond, Virgina era Eks still out and about. May end up with another #5 if things go well. They are tough critters and withstand a goodly amount of prying. Those troops who used them and #3, 4 and 6s know that.
