Electrical Adapter Question

My car has a couple of those 12V accessory outlets (you know, the rebadged cigarette lighters.)

Does an adapter exist that would let me plug into one of those and then use a standard-type plug? That is, a car adapter male end with a female end to fit the standard plug.

Thanks.

What do you mean by a standard plug? If you want to run a 110 volt ac appliance in your car you need more than an adapter -- what you need is a power inverter to convert 12 volt dc to 110 volt ac. Radio Shack has them, or anyplace that sells RV stuff. It'll run you $um buck$ and depending on what you want to run and how much power it needs it could be more cost-effective to buy a 12-volt version of it than to buy a power inverter. RV places have 12 volt versions of just about any household appliance -- coffeemakers, tv sets, refrigerators....

Boost transformers arn't cheap, by any means, plus they will drain your battery but quick if you try and run a 120v device without the engine running.

Ah, that's why I love you guys. I wasn't even thinking of the voltage difference. I had just kind of fixated on the idea of "how can I plug into the car's outlet?"

Here's what the goal is: I bought a Coleman air mattress the Mrs. and I will use when we go camping. It came with a pump (battery powered) to inflate it. The pump will inflate the mattress (queen size) in just a few minutes. But, it works so quickly because it's more like a "fan" than a high psi pump. You can't inflate a tire or a ball with it for instance.

On the contrary, the tire/ball inflator type pumps (my neighbor's got one of the 300psi models) take 35 minutes or more to fill the mattress. So far, so good, all I want to do is blow up the bed. The catch is, the dedicated pump won't get the mattress quite as firm as we'd prefer. I'm not talking about filled to bursting here, but I'd like a little more. With the higher psi pumps you could inflate until it exploded if you so chose.

Now, that's not only not what I want, it's not an option, as the Coleman doesn't have a valve that would accept the higher psi pump anyway. What I did try though (in the house) was using my Oreck handheld vacuum, set to exhaust. This let me put in the extra few pounds of air I wanted. The problem is that of course, the vac has what I referred to as a "standard" plug, meaning a two pronged affair that goes into the wall. So I guess I can't go this route.

Any ideas?

looking at camping junk and I noticed that they're selling a air pump for inflatable stuff (camping section) that plugs straight into the car lighter port... If you wanted to be able to use the pump at home as well, you can buy a $20 adapter from Radio Shack to turn household plug AC into a cigarette lighter plug.

A good Cigarette lighter plug to AC plug will cost anywhere from 100 to 500 dollars and the higher voltage units will require direct wiring to battery or alternator. I have seen some acceptable units at Radio Shack, but the best units I notice are sold at big Truck Stop places like Pilot's.
