Endura drone/trainer issue

The following comes from my recent purcasing of trainer/drones.

I purchased a Benchmade Balisong and Emerson Karambit trainer (Gunting trainer in the mail).

Both the Balisong and the Karambit are exact duplicates of the live knifes. More specifically, the Karambit has the clip configured same on live and trainer.

So my question is, I wonder why Spyderco decided (at least from the photos I have seen) to not follow suit with the Endura clip. From the photos it appears to have a "tip-up" carry were I carry "tip-down".

My mind set is to have an exact duplicate in a trainer and with a tip-up configuration does not allow for realistic training i.e. purchasing and deploying the knife.

Any thoughts?

I am tempted to take a live Endura and dull/round the blade along with coloring the blade in either blue or red.

The Endura is tip up. Thats why the trainer is tip up as well.

Doesn't make much sense to have a trainer that doesn't match the live blade.

As smcfalls13 said, the current Endura trainer is cofigured just like the current FRN live blade version. The "good news" is, that the new Endura 4 and Delica 4 trainers, like their FRN live blade counterparts, will have provision for 4 way clip mounting. Only thing I'm not sure of is when they'll hit the shelves.

The three Endura SS/PE I own all came out of the box ready to be carried "tip-down" rather then tip-up. Sure they have holes to mount the clip either way but as mentioned above they came "tip-down".

As you said and I agree, it doesn't make sense to make a trainer that doesn't match the live blade which is why I asked the question, and my question still stands...why not make one to match every SS Endura I have seen or laid hands on? I am not trying to be difficult, just trying to make sense why the trainer does not allow tip-down as well as tip-up as does the production SS model. Doesn't really matter since it appears I am out of luck so off to the grinder to make my own drone.

Thanks for the reply.

Paul, thanks for the reply on the new trainers but I already resolve myself to make my own drone (I have a friend who just loves turning live blades into drones). Once the trainers you spoke about it production I will look at them.

I'd say SS handles is your problem. Generally speaking SS is not a good handle material for SD, it's too slick. There are exceptions (Scorpius), but usually SD has something super grippy like G-10 (Lil T, Gunting, etc).

I'd also say that most MBC people prefer tip up as well. Tip down requires rotating the knife around in hand, or a spydie drop, neither of which are as reliable in a MBC situation as tip up.

I'm not into SD at all, so I could be wrong, I'm just going on what seems logical to me.

I don't disagree about slickness for some people but I have used the Endura SS in the field with no problems...no need to rotate, I carry it left-handed which ends up in a reverse grip as intended when carrying the Endura although I have moved to a Emerson Karambit recently which is tip-up.

I seen this happen in the past when I had the first edition Massad Ayoob folders and saw them move to a non-click material. Either one works for me if you utilize a "crush-grip" when used in self-defense.

Concerning the Spydie drop method...have master this in practice and have used it on the street without even thinking about what I did, as Col. Dave Grossman says (or Bruce Siddle)...it will be there when you need it if you practice with reality based training rather then static training.

Nothing like having a 6' 250lb meth adict coming at you and need to deploy your knife without a minute to think about it.
