ES1M/ES1C question

A good friend of mine who is an Emerson fanatic but who hates computers recently received a long (really long) awaited knife that he ordered directly from Mr. Emerson. I thought he was getting an ES1M, but when he showed me the knife, it is about the same size as a Commander, wheras the ES1M is significantly larger. The knife looks similar to a Commander, but is chisel ground on the left side with a single bevel all the way to the edge. It is marked Emerson SPECWAR knives with the number 20100 under the stamp. Here are my specific questions. Is this an ES1C? What does the number 20100 mean? BTW, my friend also has a cqc6 and a cqc8 both of which he also got directly from Emerson. He just like the knives, carries them daily and had no idea what they are worth until I sat him down at a computer and showed him what they sell for.

It sounds like an ES1M to me. John H and some of the other guys know more about this than me but if it has the Specwar logo I'd say it is the ES1M. I think the ES1m is only a fraction bigger than the Commander - 4 inch blade versus 3.75 inch. The handle is also larger to accomodate the bigger blade.
The ES1M has the chisel ground blade while the Commander is double beveled.

Anyway, if he's not happy with it please let me know! I'll find a home for it.

Cheers

Peter

The 20100 is actually the year 2000 the "1" is the continuation of the centre/vertical line from the spine downards ie. part of the logo.

Peter and Hilton are spot on.

First off the "1" is the tail of the vertical crosshair in the logo and the date straddles that lower leg. The logo below is an example:

As to the knife. The difference between the ES1-M and the ES1-C is that the "C" doesn't have a wave, but is the exact same size as an ES1-M. Both are true chisel ground.

There is a custom version of the Commander that is Specwar marked and undated. The blade has the same "V" gring, chisel ground edge that a Commander has. These are known as the "CM-1". There are three of them represented here on the forums I belive and they were made in 1997 if memory serves correctly.

The following measurements are approximate. but should give you a better feel for what your friend has:

Commander and CM-1
8 3/4" Over all
5 1/8" Body
3 3/4" Blade

ES1-M and ES1-C
9 3/8" Over all
5 1/2" Body
4" Blade

Here are a couple of pictures from the Gallery of a CM1 next to an ES1-M:

Hope this helps

OK, thanks for the help. It is definitely a ES1M as it is a true chisel grind. Thanks again.

BTW, he is very happy with it. I only have production Emerson stuff myself and every time I hold one of his knives I want to just go credit card crazy. My wife is a wonderful gal, but I just don't think she would understand.
