I can't read French but this review seems well done and very detailed. Wished we could see more detailed reviews such as this, both in the print magazines and here on the forums instead of everyone repeating the same old thing and doing the same old tests. I gotta hand it to the Europeans, they know how to put a high-quality magazine together and their reviews of product is much better, overall, than what us Americans do.

Who knows, the reviewer may have hated the knife but I a damn impressed with the way he laid the review out.

It does look like a great review. Let me order up a 4 and we'll try and top that in english.

That's how a review should be done. Good to see him giving the knife some good hard (ab)use too.

Hi Jeff -

You can paste the entire url into google search and google will return an option to "translate this page" - fyi.

In summary, he liked the knife, was not as enthused about the sheath or kydex and the hardware that was included. He also found that the emergency card was not waterproof. He was very complimentary of the abilities of the knife, and the way it can be re-sharpened easily in the field.

I am curious, since I love to do photo reviews; what did this gentleman do that you have not seen done on reviews before? (i.e. "the same old tests")?

I see him batoning, making a fire, chopping, shaving....he did dig with the blade and I do not recall seeing that done on reviews here, otherwise it seems to be the same typical useage of a knife that I expect to find in a knife review.

I would very much like to make my reviews more useful for the people who will read them, so I am very curious to hear you expand out on your comment a little.

Thanks and best regards -

Who knows, the reviewer may have hated the knife but I a **** impressed with the way he laid the review out.

He reviewed an ESEE-4, he came to the only possible conclusion it is the knife, the only knife. The knife of the ages. It was given to him by the lady of the lake, who drew it out of the mighty stone, where it was left after thor had forged it out of the adamantium which remained after the weapon X project, which came from a meteorite, found at the center of the earth.

God bless,
Adam

The reviewer is very happy with his ESEE 4. Clever sheath options. Solid. Easy to sharpen in field. Light, not too small, not too big. He keep it in his bag (knife in his molded sheath). And he his very carefull with what is in his bag: he should have a blind faith to the material.

Just read it earlier actually. The review is indeed excellent. Not because it praises the quality of products made by ESEE but also because this young reviewer (19 only!) went down the long road. Testing the knife to its full capacity and beyond and more importantly taking the time to take great pictures and write long descriptions to share his experiences with us.

This review is a good one because it is a technical and well formated review (that's the rules in this French forum) with facts.

The material and his characteristics (size, weight, accessories...).

The tester.

What the material could be used for.

General description.

Different configurations.

Tests.

Conclusion.

For each step the tester shows the pros and cons and explains what is good and what is not.

The format of the review make it easy to compare similar materials.

And, finaly, the tester knows the subject :-)

Not because it praises the quality of products made by ESEE but also because this young reviewer (19 only!) went down the long road. Exactly. That is what impressed me.

If you would just respond to the countless emails I have sent you to send me a knife, I would have done a review even better than that guy!

:D:p

I would have done a review even better than that guy!

After translating the review, I will say there is no way I would have done a better review of a knife.

That kid nailed everything:thumbup:

Dont speak French, but that is some serious review. He gave attention to detail hole new meaning.

Well damn, I was gonna send you an ESEE-4 to review after those dozen emails you sent me begging for one :D

In all seriousness, I think this young man did a superb job, whether he liked the knfie or not, his layout is very professional.

Looks like a great review. But, it begs the question, why would a French guy need a knife? Slice baguettes?

I was impressed by the thoroughness of the review. He even demonstrated the various ways of carrying the sheath, showing how molle fasteners are not the best method for belt carry. He really put the ESEE-4 through its paces, too. I don't need to read French to appreciate this review.

Which is the utility of such a knife?

From my point of view, no need to have an enormous knife of camp to complete necessary works with the life on the ground or to even leave themselves a bad situation.
Thus, the duet knife with fixed blade of intermediate size (10-15 cm of blade) + collapsible saw obtains the best ratio weight/obstruction/versatility.
And if ever I need more consequent, I take a hatchet which will do the work much best than a large camp and this, for the same weight.

Majority of my knives between thus in this category (except the machetes which has a quite particular function), the ESEE-4 returns perfectly in this one.
Attention, I do not criticize the tastes and the colors, they are there only my practices.

I. GENERAL PRESENTATION

The ESEE-4P-MB is delivered in its case - ambidexter Thumb Up - (with paracorde above and its cordo-to stop) with two “SOFT locks” and a “SOFT back” in option, the whole with corresponding screws and bolts, a note of explanation well done (in English but easily comprehensible, the drawings speak about them-even) as well as a small chart who recapitulates some concepts of survival (good very brief information but. At least, there are no “generally accepted ideas”).

The knife in itself (serial number with the heel).
Note the guard and the notch on the blade, as well as a heel discovered (for the bâtonnage by the bottom) and a hole of passage for dragonne:

In comparison with “Mora Lindbloms knivar sweden force”:

SOFT the back (seen of behind):

With the presence of a Velcro reduction, probably to stabilize the knife on the small belts:

SOFT locks and all screws and bolts:

There are several types of screw: those large with head punt (for SOFT the locks), those large with round head (for SOFT the back) and the small ones with round head (for the kydex only):

The explanatory leaflet (seen of behind, that which interests us):

The chart. I tested for you, it is neither resistant, nor impermeable…
If the goal were to have a “memorandum of the last chance” to put in a kit, it is not enough strapping man (if one speaks only about the support…).

Recto and Back: (click on the image to increase it)

II. The CASE AND MODES OF PORT

It seems to me good to note first of all, that ESEE is quite conscious that a knife of this size cannot go around the neck (proof in is with the note of use). Consequently, they provide what amply to fix the knife in any configuration Double Up.
And that, it is really large more (which misses with step badly knives I find…).
Me which partly did not like the kydex because of that, a little less annoyed here me is {$default_smiley_smiley}

a) The case

Not important, thanks to the kydex and with the various possibilities of fixing, the case is completely ambidextrous. I know some which will appreciate {$default_wink_smiley}

The case has a hole at the end of the housing of the point, in order to evacuate water easily.
But this will as allow, I hope for it, to prevent as the knife does not oxidize in its case during a prolonged arrangement:

Worried by a kind of “tic-tic” when I transported the knife, I am say that it was not to hold much. Indeed…

<a href="http://66.196.80.202/babelfish/translate_url_content?.intl=us&lp=fr_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fimg833.imageshack.us%2fflvplayer.swf%3ff%3dPp1020670" target="_blank">http://img833.imageshack.us/flvplayer.swf?f=Pp1020670</a>

I thus sought to correct this problem. The answer comes from the handbook Thumb Up, I quote: “yew looser knife retention is desired remove screw from Hole # 2”.
In other words, if it is wanted that the ESEE-4 is retained less in the case, he is necessary to remove the screw of the hole n°2.
However it is the reverse which I wish, and of origin there is no screw in this hole there but in that just in lower part. I thus will put one of them, CQFD!

Only, by taking the nuts of the kit “screws and bolts” and even by putting at it a small screw, it was too large:

It thus was necessary that I take a nut which was already on the case, probably sunken a little forces some since this one held well without screw.
And there, surprised, this one is smaller:

Thus, I could put a screw in the hole n°2, which solved the problem of retention of the knife but not of the “tic-tic”.

Attention should all the same be paid not to tighten the screw with the risk too much to have really evil to leave the knife.
Blow, while exploiting tightening, one obtains the desired retention {$default_smiley_smiley}

b) The “SOFT lock”

This system of port to the advantage of not taking of place and of being very light.
On the other hand, I am not convinced by his capacity to be held in place. Indeed…

<a href="http://66.196.80.202/babelfish/translate_url_content?.intl=us&lp=fr_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fimg694.imageshack.us%2fflvplayer.swf%3ff%3dPp1020668" target="_blank">http://img694.imageshack.us/flvplayer.swf?f=Pp1020668</a>

There, it is seen that it would be enough that a branch is caught in the case so that the whole is torn off.
But even goes from there with the knife thus, SOFT the lock tend to open…
Thus, I decided to use SOFT the back for the port.

c) The “SOFT back”

I find SOFT the back excellent: one can, with the choice, to completely make safe the knife (in particular for the port upside down) or then just to return the knife in the kydex when one needs to leave it every 10 seconds Thumb Up

An image is worth thousand words…

The completely protected port. I guaranteed that the knife cannot leave:

The intermediate port, that which I use all the time when I transport the knife:

Lastly, when one is in full work, it is just enough to return the ESEE-4 in the kydex, to close again the scratchs on them-even: the knife holds sufficient good, he does not trail by ground and is very quickly accessible.

To finish, SOFT the back makes it possible to fix the ESEE-4 on about anything, “SOFT” grace precisely to fixings. Option which the soldiers should like and should to soon be useful me {$default_wink_smiley}

d) The port “paracorde”

Then that, I do not know if that exists elsewhere but I found the idea excellent!

For the weight of the case kydex only + the short period of paracorde, one has there what to suitably fix the knife, as well with horizontal as with the vertical.

I thought that the blocker would not hold out… Until I try to remove the case in force Thumb Up

For me, it is typically a system which falls under an optics melts of bag/kit of cubic survival/.
Indeed, there is the knife and the case reduced to bare essential in order to saving weight and space, without to decrease the capacity of the tool.
It is besides in this manner that I transport the knife, in my kit of survival.

III. PRELIMINARY TESTS

First of all, I wanted to see a little the completion of the ESEE-4 left factory.
Razor…

Small test of cut, judge by yourself:

Crossed Net, water does not even have waltz everywhere! The knife still shaved after…

IV. TESTS GROUND

After these pretests more than conclusive, see a little what has this knife in the belly…

a) Cross

The weight and the gauge of the knife make it possible not to hesitate to embark it (light and compact) at all the exits.
But to in no case they are not limiting factors when it is a question of working with.
Indeed, with a catch in adapted hand…

One can really output: here test of “chopping”, less than one minute (of the oak not super dryness, OK, but nevertheless):

One can also work very finely, the notch on the blade as well as small the guillochage with the back allows a catch in hand very brought closer to the edge and thus to be very precise:

I did not know Micarta and thought that was going to slip once wet but at all, that hangs always as much.

b) Bâtonnage

I know that here some are not fans of the bâtonnage but curiously the following tests are an good example, that fall well {$default_cheesy_smiley}

Training course of the 1+2+3 of the 11 at November 14, passage of level 1 on level 2, lighting of collective fire by the framing team, wood of bad quality (pine died already started by the decomposition) and very wet: one bâtonné and blew during 30 min to prevent fire from dying out. And it is not fault of having put one crowned amount of fire-lighter… Thus yes the bâtonnage is sometimes necessary:

A little side stress? {$default_grin_smiley}

Even not badly:

The bâtonnage is not only used to split logs.
Indeed, before having logs precisely, it is sometimes necessary to recut the trunks.
A saw is the suitable tool for this work but when one does not have a saw, one can draw some by using the principle from the addition: there is a knife without mass and one has a mass which does not cross. One adds both and here the result:

After 5 min (the oak was quite dry this time):

V. THOROUGH TESTS

Good, you suspect that I did not stop there… The knife being perfectly well involved of normal use, one will see until where it can go…

a) Intensive Bâtonnage

4 quite dry and quite knotty sticks of pine to split into 4.
The size of the blade was limiting in order to type only on the point.
No concern, the nodes pass with a disconcerting ease blink (in comparison, even if I like much Moras, those it would be wedged).

b) Side stress

The weak point of the knives, they are the side stresses.
If the heat treatment is not good, the knife breaks.
Here, nothing to repeat, the ESEE-4 arises right perfectly:

c) Behaviour of the wire and sharpening

In love with the beautiful blades, jump this paragraph {$default_grin_smiley}

Training course CEETS 4 objects, it comes one moment when I need to find roots of pine to make my shelter.
I could have cut a branch for that but I preferred to test the behaviour of the wire for you Karto' S Smiley :

Good the ESEE-4 did not shave any more after hein, but it still crossed very well.

The trick it is that it is super easy to give again a good to him slicing on the ground.

I used the file diamond of my Leatherman and in less than 5 min (while David spoke {$default_grin_smiley}), it shaved again! And that, for me it is super important.
(A knife which can be sharpened only at home (steel thing to be sharpened with the stone with water for example) must remain at home!)

There is a knife made there to last on the ground.

VI. CONCLUSION

Useless to say to which point I am content with the ESEE-4. That made a long time that I hear of these knives in good, I was not disappointed.

For 250 gr. (knife + case kydex only), one has a robust knife, compact and of which the length of the blade is adapted perfectly:
The ESEE-4 is neither too small to do large work, nor too large - what would slow down us to carry it, a good compromise all in all {$default_smiley_smiley}

In order to support my dires, the ESEE-4 is currently in my content of bag and like known as in the subject on my bottom of bag, I give a very detailed attention to the material that I put at it: it is necessary that I have a blind confidence in this material, in order to be able to rest me above if ever the situation becomes critical.

For the pleasure and to finish, a small photograph of the knife after several weeks of use:
