lets start out by admiting, i am no sharpnin guru. i have a cold steel tylite aus8 knife for EDC. sharp as hell when new. but after the new wears off, i have never gotten it as sharp ever again. so as time and sharpnin attempts pass, the blade begins so wear back to a point that it is too thick to ever have an edge like that ever again.
looking at concave ground blades, this wear area is extended there by extending the blades useful life. the esee knives are straight ground as i recall. how long can one reasonably expect to use this blade type till it erodes back to a point that it is too thick to take an edge?
also, can you share techniques and equipment used to maintain the edge on these little gems?

I have been using an EdgePro Apex for some time now. I have no problem at all maintaining the edge on my ESEE blades.
Tonight I touched up my Izula and RC-3. Both will cleanly push cut newspaper.

I bought one of those Smith's diamond sharpeners at Wal-Mart it is the best $8.00 I have spent. I use it then strop the blade and it is hair popping sharp.

Anyone can learn to sharpen knives if you put the time in to acquire the skill. It is a great skill to have... You will no longer need to buy new knives when yours go dull. It takes time, but you will be glad you learned it once you do.

A Sharpmaker would be a good start if you want the standard 20 and 25 (15?) degree angles on your edges. ESEE sharpens at 20 degrees so you'd be able to maintain them well. I finally got around to ordering the diamond rods and one more Ultra Fine rod (only bought one) so I'll be putting the thing to full use within a week or two, when my order from Tim comes in.

Re-beveling edges may require the diamond rods or another more aggressive method at stock removal. You may want to look into the DMT Diafold set (magna guide?) that comes with the guide system and two diafolds -extra course/course and fine/extra fine. You can buy a extra extra fine diafold if you want to, or buy 6, 8 or 10" whetstones.

I'd choose the DMT diafold guide set over the aligner set....the diafolds are more useful by themselves and easily can get thrown in a bag.
