I have an estimate for waterjet cut platens based on the new design. I'm actually surprised how reasonable it is. Very doable. If you are interested in this let me know and I can get it going.
I'll need deposits from everyone who wants in. I'm not looking to make a dime on this, so you pay cutting costs, plus shipping to get your platen frame. (Unless it just gets to a crazy quantity, then I might add a handling cost to cover time and expense).
Obviously getting 10 of these made will be the most cost effective.
The other parts that might be a bit tricky for the home shop are the platen mount block and rods. Not terribly difficult to do. I did them on my portaband and mini-mill.
But I can probably have this same shop quote out those parts if need be. I don't have the capacity to make a bunch of these myself.
Some of the holes need to be tapped. Another aspect this shop can probably handle for us at a reasonable cost. Keep all that in mind and let me know if you want those parts cut and the holes tapped.
If you are in, you'll need to answer these questions.
1. Stainless or Mild Steel?
2. Holes tapped?
3. Mounting block and rods cut out and tapped?
4. How many you want.

I'll repost the quick video I shot yesterday so you can see what it's all about.
I will be in for two of these, so 8 slots remaining to be filled minimum. For this particular design you need an esteem grinder, or you need to have a tool arm with 3/4 mount hole. And you also need to ensure the off-center mount won't mess you up as far as grinding height.
This design could be modified to fit a center mount config, which probably matches more grinders. If enough folks chime in on that we can re-draw the mount on the platen and get those cut out too.

Also note: You are on your own as far as drilling, tapping, and otherwise outfitting your platen. I'm happy to share the parts lists and specifications for my build. It wasn't difficult. The most difficult part was designing it and working out the bugs.

Have you thought about making these out of 6061 aluminum? Typically cheaper than mild steel, with a bit more corrosion resistance, and may be cheaper to waterjet as well.

Just a thought.

I hadn't considered it, but I reckon it could be done. I'd be a bit concerned about the wheel mounts stripping out at some point. But I don't know aluminum very well. Not on this type of thing.

Hello Mr Brock, if one wanted a center mount frame with a flat and radiused platen, what would be the ticket for that set of choices?

Thanks--Don

Hey Don,
Nathan machines radiused and flat platens from time to time. Other than that you'd have to make your own.
As for the center mount, there would have to be enough folks wanting one to make a run. I guess we'll see what the interest is on this thread.

I like what you've done. If we can get to the 10 qty pricing I would be in.
I would also be interested to see the pricing on the other options you have listed. I would only need 1 and I would prefer stainless.

Edited to add for ease of viewing:
1. Stainless
2. Holes tapped
3. Mounting block and rods cut out and tapped
4. 1

So I would like one as the other fellows listed:
1. Stainless
2. Holes tapped
3. Mounting block, rods cut & tapped
4. 1

Could you provide a so called 'typical' platen?

Thanks--Don

Hey Don, can you provide a pic of your frame as mounted to your grinder so I can see what it will entail as far as modifications?
Thanks
Mark

I'm a little confused as to exactly which parts your are offering in this deal.

I suggest, as long as the Mod here is OK with it, you build a set of 10 and offer them for sale in the exchange. Give a set price for a full unit, stainless, tapped, cut, etc. and you'll probably sell all 10 rather quickly. Don't forget to notify on here that they are available in the exchange.

Put me down for one when you have them finished.

I'm OK with this thread as long as it stays simple and is a group buy. I think once all the exact preferences get worked out it should go to The Echange and all the money end be done there. You can link the two threads to each other for navigation ease.

Hopefully, this one doesn't go south. Some advice to all concerned is be specific.
Brock should state his parameters, and those are what is offered. Unless the consensus is that something different is going to be more popular, other choices aren't in the mix.
For example, if Brock says he is offering flat platens, don't ask what a radiused platen would cost, etc.

Thanks Stacy. Once I have the final quote in and I know what this shop can provide us I'll post the exact list of components to be delivered, with basic specifications.
I will also provide a list of parts that recipients will still need to get to complete a build. Bolts, wheels, etc...

I do want to make it clear that I am not selling anyone anything. Everyone is just chipping in to buy their own parts here. Assembly and use is up to each individual. I am just coordinating the purchase of parts for the group.
I do not sell grinders, grinder parts, or grinder assemblies.
