I always have trouble with the stencil leaving a visible mark when I etch my logo in damascus or damasteel (a big square shadow). Should I etch my logo before etching the blade?

Not quite, but thanks for the info. He's using a stencil which leaves a blank area that isn't etched around his mark. I don't want the blank area.

I etch my name deeply with the stencil, before I etch the blade in my ferric chloride/water solution. My mark stays nice and clear.

That's what I thought. I have only etched a few damascus blades, and have been missing that piece of the puzzle. Appreciate it.

Tito,

I also apply the makers mark before the etch and fairly deep as well. If you have a marking feature on your machine, that blackens the etch, this is a good time to use it. It helps it stand out on the oxide surface of the blade.

After the etch boil the blade for about 10 minutes.. This will help set the oxides a little better. Then do your pattern etch. This is the very reason I went away from the electro chem process. I went to a stamp then a jewelers engraver. Good luck
