Ever think about making a machete?

My grandfather had a WWII machete handed down to him from his dad and as a kid i always liked to play with it. I believe it was about a quarter inch thick or maybe a little more, it was just an all around huge machete. Would you be able to do something like this? How much do you think it would cost? Walking through the woods down the end of my road to go fishing sometimes is a pain because of all the prickers and such, and i was just looking at my knife this morning going "i could hold them and cut them, but it would be easier to just swing at them from a distance". Do you think 01 would handle machete duty without chipping out?

The longest overall length I can go is about 13". You are better off buying a 1/8" thick machete, something like what Fiddleback is doing.

So, out of curiosity (since I know I can't afford it anyway), what if someone provided you with, say, 24" of O1 bar stock? I happen to have exactly that, but it's reserved already, I'm afraid, but if someone were to send you that, do you think you would be willing to do a machete? Ever since that custom machete contest started in W&SS I've been wondering what a JK machete would look like :P

I think the issue is the maximum length that his forge can accommodate for heat treating.

What about something like a condor golok machete? 1075 steel and around 1/4" thick.

Ahh, that's something I hadn't thought of--I forgot that not all the knifemakers I know have ginormous sword forges :P. Yeah, if the forge will only accommodate up to 13" then that would be a problem, haha
