This is new version of P with SGPS steel on the blade (laminated with VG2).

This is biggest folder with SGPS they have - 3":

Design as I understand pretty common japanese - first I saw it on Hiro Little Blue:

However there are few differences - slightly convex grind vs hollow grind, frame lock vs hidden liner lock, polish is not mirror polish as for Hiro. Otherwise, it is pretty close.

I am wondering about this steel SGPS. Composition is pretty similar to CPM S30V
SGPS:
C=1.4 Cr=15 Si=0.5 Mo=2.8 Mn=0.4 S=0.03 P=0.03 V=2.0
CPM S30V:
C=1.45 Cr=14 Mo=2 V=4 N=0.2
However japanese metallurgists make it possible to harden it to 62HRC while CPM S30V is softer

It is also pretty close to another japanese PM steel SRS-15:
C=1.5 Cr=13 W=1.25 Mo=2.75 V=1.5
which also has like 65HRC

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks, Vassili, I've been very interested in this knife. Your pictures and comments clarify many questions I've had.

I believe the Fallkniven comes with a leather sheath or pouch ... ? If so could you post a picture of it? Interested if it clips to the pocket, and how easy or hard it is to draw the knife.

BTW looks like that Little Blue Liner Lock might be a favorite, got some honest wear on it.

Nice pics nozh,

I have the original VG10 / Black Micarta mod P.

I believe the Fallkniven comes with a leather sheath or pouch ... ? If so could you post a picture of it? Interested if it clips to the pocket, and how easy or hard it is to draw the knife.

It comes with a cordura sheath with belt "slits" for either vertical or horizontal carry.

I did pictures, hopefuly I will post them tommorow. It is sintetic pouch for belt (not a clip but what is it - belt loop?), so it can not be cliped to the pocket, to belt only. However it is very nice and comfortable. Exactely what Nordic Viking sad.

I carry Little Hiro for a while, but this idonized titanium is so easy to scratch - keys, coins, etc!

Thanks, Vassili.

I've also been waiting on this knife.
The first reports of a very uneven lamination line let me wait the get one which is produced a bit later in time.
I know it's only cosmetic and does nothing at the performance, but I realy like it as a nice gentleman's pocket knife, so I do care about it.

I have the original for quite some time and I really like it.
I think I'm gone order one together with de zdp-caly3.
So in about two months.

It's hard to be patient ;)

Wanted to say it's also available in two other handle collours if you look into the fällkniven catalogue.

Can you measure the edge width on that one? It looks pretty thin and acute for a factory offering. Cliff Stamp lent me his Fallkniven U2 in SGPS, it was reground by Tom Krein to an extremely thin and high hollow grind at about 4 degrees per side with an edge width of <.005". It gets really sharp (I use a 15 degree microbevel and bring it up to Spyderco Ultra Fine, and gets sharper than a standard utility razor blade, which is admittedly burred, on my yellow pages cutting tests, even when the U2 is only at a DMT 600 finish), is very easy to sharpen, and is a great precision cutting tool. It holds an edge unlike anything I have ever used. A lot of that is due to the aftermarket geometry, but it is pretty impressive that SGPS can handle those geometries without falling apart, considering it appears to be S30V with 1/2 the Vanadium, though it does get a good bit harder. The U2 is a very different knife though, a very small Zytel lockback with a 2.5" blade. The P definately has my interest, but my knife budget is already blown for the next few months.

Thanks for the info on the pouch, Viking and Vassili.

I know the VG10 Model P Fallknivens have been out for maybe three years now, though I've never seen them mentioned much. With SGPS I think this could turn out to be a very popular knife.

Here it is with U2.

I can not say for sure with my instrument, but it looks like quite less then 1/64" thick at the point where the edge started. SGPS layer is about 1/64".

Fogot to mention that this it is cocobolo on the handle. And there is no lainyard hole. And scales are 420 - so probably not to easy to scratch.

Thanks, Vassili.

This is the pouch:

And this is result of my sharpness test:

70 ++++
80 +++
90 +++X+++
100 ++++
110 ++
120 +

Median is 90, it is better then 110 on BassPro Buck 110 CPM 154, but still lower then Spyderco Military BG42 which was 60 (among the knives for wich I tested sharpness out of the box).

Thanks, Vassili.

Hi again, Vassili. Not to go OT, but I have a few questions about the Hiro ....

How thick is the liner lock, and do you feel it's secure? Also how is the VG-10 blade in the Hiro? I understand it's laminated VG-10, and have heard they may bend rather easy. Does it hold an edge well?

Thanks.

First Hiro I have had tip bended when I tried to take wooden pin out of hole (stuck but not glued) - diasssembling some Ikea furniture. It was replaced, but I do not try to do anything like this.

It was my gentelman knife and I did not do too much cutting, I did not notice really anything wrong with holding edge, but again did not cut too much with it and did not run any test. Same with liner - knife is too small to be used to "power" cutting, so should notbe an issue. I do not have it with me currently, but I will check thickness this evening.

It also has problem with scrues - they came out and I have to fix them myself with Blue Loctite. And you see that blue surface is too easy to scratch.

Thanks, Vassili.

Thanks again, Vassili, it's great to get first-hand information like this. Very informative thread, and excellent photos too.
