as my name implies, i am rather new to both this forum and the realm of knife collecting. based upon much of what i have read here, i was thinking about picking up an al mar sere 2000 but i noticed that it has a false edge. why is that/ what practical purpose does a false edge serve? it seems to me (i admit my ignorance) that a false edge would only made the blade weaker at that part of the spine. ( i apologize for asking such a dumb question if it is in fact a dumb question). any help you guys can give me is appreciated!

What is properly known as a false edge is somewhat misleading. A false edge is an edge on the spine of the blade that is sharpened.

A swedge is an edge on the spine of the blade that is unsharpened.

So, I assume you mean swedge.

It looks nice, and you can sharpen it, if you so choose. It's a little more difficult than if it were already sharpened of course, but a whole lot easier than creating and edge from scratch. It lightens the blade at the tip also, and may increase any penetration from stabbing - since it isn't as thick towards the point.

I wouldn't be too concerned about it being weaker... It should still be plenty strong to take normal (ab)use.

I really like swedges and false-edges, myself. The weehawk blade profile is one of my favorites. I have thought about sharpening a swedge before, but have never attempted it.

oh, and welcome to the forums :)

Yeah Silverlight hit most of it, and I'd add if you decide to shapen the swedge on a Sere 2000, I'd have it professionally done if I were you...

Welcome to the Forums... :)
