alright, as a man who likes options, im an avid fan of the stockman pattern. what better choice than 3 blades for any given cutting chore. question being, which of the three blades on a stockman do you find yourself using the most? in looking at my 8OT, the sheepsfoot is worn significantly more than the other two from sharpening. seems that the sheepsfoot always comes out first when i need to cut something. what are your observations?

The Sheepsfoot (or for that matter a Wharncliffe too) feel (and are!) strong blades for their size, that you can lean on. Not surprising therefore, that they tend to get the most use. (The third blade on my EDC Stockman is a Pen blade - which hardly ever gets used - its still got the factory edge even).

I carry a stockman alot and it is the sheepsfoot that I use the most but I use all three blades some.

One of the reasons I carry a congress pattern knife a lot is because most of them have two sheepfoot blades.
I don't know if the congress will ever replace my affection for stockman pocketknives but I sure do like the congress pattern.

i find the congress pattern appealing as well, i guess it was the extra bulk i didnt always like. Also, ive always been an avid Old Timer fan. I was so dissapointed to see them go under... they were absolute classics and are missed already. I could always take their carbon steel and within ten minutes have the edge reprofiled to 20 degrees and shaving hair before it even touched my arm. Beautiful stuff man.....

Sheepsfoot for sure. I use that so much that I am switching over to the Congress pattern because it gives you two of them. Now if I can only find a Congress maker who uses something like 1095, a simple carbon steel. Any suggestions?

Bob....Moore Maker offers a 3-1/2" bone handled congress in 1095. It has a nice blade combination....two master sheepfoots, one small coping and a small clip.....the 3-1/2" is a nice size for EDC.

I just ordered one from CKW...

Let me know how it is when you get it. I have been wanting a MM for some time now. Probably going to be my next knife.

When I use a stockman, I also use the sheepsfoot blade the most.

But when I use my Swiss Army Knives, I think I use the bottle-opener/screwdriver the most.

Cheers,
Allen.

While I prefer the sheepsfoot blade, and I agree with all of your reasonings, I also have to add that it's also the blade that sticks up the highest and is the easiest to open. Man, is that lazy or what? :D

.... and if you select another blade..... it still sticks up the highest and hurts your hand.

Here's a trick for those of you who dislike how high the sheepsfoot blade on your stockman sits. Take a Dremel and grind down the blade's kick -- that will bring the blade down a bit when in the closed position and make for more comfortable handling. Grind just a wee bit, then check. Repeat until it sits just where you want it. I do this with all my user stockman knives.

Also, for those of you talking up the congress pattern, check out this Queen congress-like knife with cocobolo handles and D2 steel (model QN31CO). Man, I wish they'd make this one with their carved stag bone handles!

ive tried gridning the kick down on some knives. ive found that it also doesnt hold the blade shut as well because it also reduces the tension that is held against the blade in the closed position.
