The title says it all - what would be you fav Spyderco for EDC and SD, with a 3.5" max blade. Has to be a regular folder.

Thanks,

Joss

First of all, I wouldn't advise to pick one folder for both EDC and SD. I prefer to keep one folder as sharp as possible for emergencies, and another one for utility use. Plus, as a knife collector, you get to have more fun that way! :D

Anyway, the folder you are looking for should have a fully serrated edge. These tend to stay sharp longer, so better for SD use. I would recommend any of the following, since I own, carry and use them:

- Dodo
- Li'l Temp
- Native, preferrably the new FRN Native III
- Delica, comes with a trainer! The handle is less secure than the first three
- Paramilitary, the handle is less secure than the first three

I don't own one, but I would also seriously consider the ATR for your purposes.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with,

Wouter

If it has to be both EDC and SD, I'd choose the Chinook II. It's designed for SD, but I feel it's comfortable enough to carry for EDC.

Oops, it's 3 and 3/4". :o I guess then I'd go along with Deacon and pick the Persian. I believe Brownie carries one for SD, and I think he's pretty well trained to know what would work for that. Great EDC.

Millie for SD and Para for EDC.

Joss,

There are as many answers to your question as there are people. What I reccommend to anyone who asks this question is to get either the Delica or Endura since people generally have a great ideal about what size they prefer.

The Delica/Endura may not be the knife you stick with, but it's a basic tactical folder and you can depend on it for everything. It will give you an excellent ideal of what your personal preferences are, and it won't cost you a lot of money in the long run.

Plus you'll never outgrow it. Even if it works its way out of your EDC it will be most useful as the knife you keep in a car or in a desk, and even if you can't find a use for it, it's easily traded off.

When I carry a knife that size, it is almost always the Persian.

Existing models?....S30 Native would be my choice. Whatever it is, it has to be light, since running would be my preferred SD option. Maybe a Lum Chinese....since it is so beautiful, an attacker couldn't stay mad long enough to hurt me after I showed it to them.

Dream models?....a G10 handled Lum, or a Native blade in a Dodo style handle. Seriously, for SD, a knife that I can use as an impact weapon, like the Dodo, fits my training (blackbelt in flailnrun) better than a folding mini-sword.

IMHO I disagree with the full serrated edge option. A PE is easier for me to maintain, so it actually stays functionally sharper.

I can't deploy as folder fast enough for SD (though Mike Janich does on his tapes), so I don't carry my folders with that in mind. However, any of the Spyderco's would do in a pinch, from Jester (not to be under-rated) to the Military.

I will second the Endura/Delica with a slight difference. Get two of what ever size you prefer. Personally I like a plain and a serrated but that may depend on your type of cutting chores. Also in regards to serrations for your sd blade I have heard there are some drawbacks in regards to binding on heavy clothing. The serrated edge might react in strange ways when used hard against heavily clothed attackers. Skipping or bouncing or binding. A pair of delicas gives you two easily carried and deployed very sharp and comfortable knives at a low price. They should be legal anywhere in the US too.

good luck

Not that know much about SD, but I am surprised that nobody mentioned the Yo. Asside from the Civilian it would be my first choice.

True that it would be great for SD, but for dual role knives, the point of this thread I believe, a stronger tip is needed than either the Civi or the Yo.
