Anyone have one, or know anything about these? I have one on order. Says in the write up that these are a special run of lights. As far as I can tell it has no switch at the back and on/off and switching is handled by turning the head. Does say that it has a X shaped design on the back that looks to be raised and maybe is there to hold onto when switching? Does have the 5 modes with a max output of 180 Lumens along with a special medium orange peel reflector to help smooth out the beam. Runs on a single 123CR. Looks like the ideal light for my purposes.

I have a P1D.. It is one of the coolest small lights I ever saw. It has 3 light levels, strobe, and SOS. It is brighter than my surefire 6P no problem.. For the price you will not be unhappy.

The P1D-Q5 is a twisty - there is no tail-switch.

The X on the end is to accomodate a keyring attachment - and to be able to tail stand the light.

Please take a look at -

Fenix P1D-CE comparison Review

it's not the Q5 version but an early P3 (or P4) version - but there is plenty of detail and discussion.

For a single CR123 light with a clicky tail-switch take a look at -
Fenix Digital P2D Black Premium Q5
the advantage of the P2D is that the head is the same as for the L1D and L2D -
so buying the spare bodies one can have a 1x CR123 or 1x AA or 2x AA light with the same head.

I have a P1D Q5. It is very impressive, and is my EDC flashlight. I am sure you won't be disappointed.

According to this http://www.brightguy.com/products/Fenix_L1D_Q5_Black.php the Fenix L1D Q5 Black has a pushbutton tailcap.

Yes the L1D-Q5 does have a clicky tail-switch -
but we're talking about the P1D-Q5.

These are not the Q5 versions but the L1D is the leftmost, and the P1D is the rightmost light.

really esav, i used to know all the fenix lites not anymore lol, i dont like the twisty tail cap ones as much as the buttons FWIW, i also dont see WTF the deal is with the SOS mode, useless imho.

but they are great lites for the $$ no doubt about it.

I'm probably overloaded just now because I've been studying them for a couple of days recently. I do not need the Turbo mode and I don't know if I like too much in the way of light levels. Low and high will do me fine. I am not ready to pull the trigger on any of them right now.

So many great flashlights and all I have is two eyes! :D :p

I don't think there are any Fenix flashlights with twisty tailcaps. They are all twisty heads.

Yeah, there are plenty of people who'd agree about the SOS and even strobe modes being superfluous over at CPF - some getting pretty heated about those modes......

Me? I don't think it's worth getting a heart-attack over

I actually quite like the "idea" of the Strobe mode - this can be a real attention getter - first shine the maximum (Turbo mode) brightness - if that does not do it - switch to the next mode which is the strobe.

As for the SOS mode - it's the very last one in the sequence in the General mode - so one need not access it -
and fortunately I have never had an emergency to need to signal SOS -
but I do like the old saying "it's better to have and not need it, than to need and not have it."
- that's why I also carry a loud whistle - even though I have not had the occassion to use it. (see post #39 in Pics of some of my Whistles )

Are the twisty heads done to make the light even shorter for ease of carry? Comparing the pics of the P1D Q5 to the L1D Q5 and looks like you come up with an inch of difference in length, with the P1D being the shorter. This was one reason I chose it. Just not sure how long it will take me to get used to the twist head to turn it on and off and to switch between lumen settings.

Twisty heads are simpler mechanically so may be more reliable.

BUT for the Fenix D(igital) series the mode change is much easier with a clicky tail-switch - one merely has to tap the switch to change modes - whereas twisting can be awkward - especially if it's cold.

You are NOT comparing apples to apples - L1D is an AA light - and the P1D is a CR123 light - an AA battery is physically longer than a CR123....

The P2D is the other single CR123 light with a clicky tail-switch - it is still longer - but it is shorter than the L1D.

Vincent: can you use an L2D Q5 head on a 1xCR123 body, or is it the wrong boost/buck/whatever circuit?

thx

Yes....
The L1D, L2D and P2D heads are basically the same -
the head will run on 1x AA, 2x AA and 1x CR123.

So just getting one of the variations, and the other 2 bodies -
one can essentially have 3 lights in one.

lol, yep meant twist head, dont like it, could live without the strobe mode also, as i said the SOS is worthless, even if stranded on a desert isle i would as soon not have it,

i dont think i'll have a heart attack over any of it though lol.

as i said the fenix's are good lites esp for the $$.

as i said the SOS is worthless, even if stranded on a desert isle i would as soon not have it,

Some out of the box reasoning to why the SOS mode may have been included.

On an old style flashlight - one could signal any Morse code (if known) including SOS by using the flash mode on the switch.

BUT on a Fenix D(igital) series if one tried flashing manually by the momentary off with the reverse clicky -
the result would be a mode change instead -

So there is NO way to signal SOS manually -
hence perhaps the reason why they included the SOS -
even if not many people would have the occassion to use it.

thats exactly why i buy flashlites, to communicate by morse code lol.

i couldnt care less that there would be no way to manually do morse code lol.

& i still say its completey worthless for 99% of people, YOU would need this for what?????? i would dare say most would see the light and not know WTF the flashing meant.

to communicate via morse code i would for one thing need to know morse code and i have exactly "0" inclination/need to learn it.

come on now lol, if ya like it fine but dont try and rationalize it to me lol imho its retarded.

I don't particularly like it or dislike it -
I already know you DISlike it -
I wasn't trying to convince you of anything ....

A lot of people DO use flashlights for signalling - by simple flashing.
One canNOT manually signal by flashing with the Fenix "D" series -
so my guess was that they included the SOS -
as a sort of selling gimmick -
and averting any criticism that one could not signal SOS......

However like I said I am not going to have any form of
heart attack over this ....

.....do you need to call a doctor? :p
