I'll be doing some file work on the spine of a knife I'm working on, should the file work be done after the heat treat? The knife is O-1. Just wondering if the file work will cause fissures or stress fractures?

Thanks

You can do it either way. Depends on if you are going to differentially heat treat. If you leave the spine soft you can do it afterward. If it is a regular solid heat treat make sure to take extra files and lunch to the shop. LOL Terry

I have done file work on many O1 blades that were edge quenched, if you edge quench it doesn't matter, if the whole blade is hard, it will be a big PITA to do the file work once the steel is hardened.

Just try not to create any "sharp" 90 degree corners in your file work, and you will be fine for HT.
If you want to wait till after, get diamond coated needle files and you will have no problem filing a hard blade.:)

I do mine before HT. Where in the Northeast are you. We just start a New England Custom Knife Assocations (NECKA). An we are having a Hammer-In 9/14&15.

I do mine before.
I'm getting so I like to do things the easyer way.:)

this way I get to make more knives with the time I save.
JMO and the way I do it. :)
