Filling holes in wood

Hey Y'all...

I mentioned in another thread that the wood I'm working with has some black, shiny crystalline looking stuff running through it in the grain in a couple of places. (this is Eucalyptus wood). I've finished shaping and sanding my handle, and there are some pits left where this stuff "chunked" out as I sanded. Does anyone have any idea how I might fill these holes?

I am planning on finishing the handle with Danish Oil, so I want to use something that won't make my finish look uneven. I thought of using superglue or epoxy but I was afraid that it would have a different color than the rest of the handle since that wood would no longer soak in the oil.

What do you think I should use?

Howdy There....!
For what it's worth here is my suggestion. Take a small sample of the wood and sand it to the same level that you have your handle now. On a small area try sealing it with the gel-superglue, then on another portion of the sample seal it with a small amount of expoy. Let it dry good and try sanded it down to your finished level, then finish with the oil and see what happens. I have had good results using both glues for diferent size problems and the areas came out clear and where not noticable at finishing. Good Luck....!

Later "Possum"

zapagap is the gap fill superglue i have the best results with, you can find it a most hobby stores. it has a green label and the super thin is red, if i remenber correctly. i fill most of the gap and let it dry, then i fill the rest in and sand with 400 grit paper as it dries.it blends well this way.

You might want to look at this as an opportunity instead of a problem. Now you have a chance to add some color to your handles that you wouldn't have otherwise. It's easy to add color to epoxy before filling the holes. Sometimes that will add to your knife instead of detracting from it. Maybe some turquois inlace? Just a thought...may not be the thing to do in your case but it is another option.

Thanks for the advice. I had thought of using black colored epoxy to fill to match the rest of that black stuff in the holes, but I was afraid it would stain more than just the holes. I may try the superglue thing on a scrap. Thanks again...
