This is the GOOD stuff, guys...not any ole off-the-shelf D2.

This is from Crucible, the crowd that brought us 3V.

It's actually about the same price as 3V too! :foot:

Anyway, their particle-method of making steel promises reduced grain and we all know that the biggest complaint against D2 is enlarged grain (and difficult sharpening - due to the oversize carbides). This is resolved (the best they can) in CPM D2.

Anyway...can ya tell I'm excited about it?!?

I got a good sized piece in 1/8" oversize thickness....so I should have enough to do a dozen or so bushcraft knives.

If anybody wants anything specific, now's the time to speak up.

Thanks!

Dan

oooh nice! how do you think this would compare with the 3v in the bushcraft knife?

It's hard to tell, specifically....since I've yet to test it personally.

But "on paper" it should still have equal (if not better) wear resistance and be "nearly stainless".

As with any stainless...there's a tradeoff for toughness. But it will still be pretty darn tough. ;)

I'm not sure what variety of D2 that Charlie May uses but comparing his D2 to the 3V bushcraft that Dan uses I'd say that the 3V is tougher but harder to sharpen.

The D2 is cool cause you can take the blade and just wash it off and let it dry in the dish drainer and no spots. But it is not as resistant to the micro chipping as the 3V in the Bushcraft is.

I have a spyderco military with a CPM D2 blade. I like it a lot. Holds an edge like you would not believe. It came shaving sharp, and it remains so.
I was told it has a tendency to rust, but I have not seen this in mine. I carry it IWB; no rust or stains so far. I do not keep the blade oiled, but coated it with the same wax that I use on my Mustang. Works so far.
The CPM D2 should make an outstanding bushcraft knife.

Dan, the CPM D2 sounds like wonderful steel. I hope there's some left when my pending Bushcraft get's made.
