I'm a hair away from ordering a Wested Leather jacket in Goat. But I'm interested to see if anyone can recommend something better... I want a 3 season jacket / coat that will stand up to rugged abuse, freezing Ohio winters, and looks decent. Can anybody help?

Goat is my bar-none-favorite leather, it's soft, drapes beautifully so it looks great, and is tough as nails, far more durable than cow, or lamb, as good as horse but with the perfect amount of grain (horse is sometimes so smooth it looks like vinyl.)

I have a jacket from 'Wings, linked above. It is the finest garment I have ever owned. I got it to replace my previous leather jacket (cowhide) that I had worn daily for 15 years and that was beginning to come apart. -Best clothing move I've ever made. I had actually ordered from Wested, then got cold feet and cancelled. The Indy link above has got lots of info on Wested. It is my understanding that their quality control is back on track and their workmanship is excellent. At the time however, what I read seemed to indicate that their customers were either thrilled or horrified, no in betweens. The latter would order one thing but get something totally different, etc. and the wait was often months. I got my goat in a couple of days and the quality is second to none. The 'Wings Indy jacket is really a Military grade A2 jacket, as used by the USAF, but cut in a different style. All fasteners and stitching are milspec, etc. And the Sarge is a pleasure to deal with.

By the way, I'm in the NYC area, and this is my 3 season jacket. The goat is a lighter weight leather than cow and not as warm. I'd guess that an average person would probably be comfortable 65F down to 30F. Again, that's a guess, I'm a cold weather type, so I wear mine regardless. As long as you're not hunting from a treestand, you should be fine. -Leave the house, get in the car, heater's on, drive to work, get out, walk inside; the average person would have no trouble.

Hope this helps.

I highly recommend Barbour wax cotten jackets as they are 100% waterproof, very tough and have a classic look. They come in a lot of different styles, ranging from short jackets to trenchcoats, all are functional with a lot of pockets, high protective corduroy collars, stud in hoods and warm pile linings. They gain a certain character with use which makes each jacket kind of unique and after some years( as their advertisement says)more of an old friend than an old jacket. When ever some tears or holes appear the jacket can be sent back to the factory and be repaired and rewaxed, though you might do that yourself. As traditional british country wear they have been common amongst hunters, fishermen, farmers and dogowners. Barbour is imo something like the european Filson, but different from Filson Barbour made it´s way to a very popular piece of cloth among all differnt social groups, ranging from the before mentiond outdoorsmen to the cognoscenti, which imo is due to the fact that they carry 3 royal warrants. To cut that short they are very functional without looking technical and are very well accepted wherever you may be.

You might check out Ventile garments. Most US retailers charge an arm and a leg (EXAMPLE but you can order them directly from the UK much more reasonably. See http://www.west-winds.co.uk/ventile.htm I was going to try their Ventile Shirt to see if I liked it and then look at their other stuff, but I got distracted by other toys (first a Benchmade 806D2 and now a Surfire M2 or preferably M2D).

www.ibexwear.com is closing out their Picos Jacket for $90 (was $225).

Also check out http://www.lostworldsinc.com/ They picked up where Willis & Geiger left off and sell some really nice looking leather, wool and Bush Poplin garments.

My Filson Whipcord Cruiser is a really nice 3-season jacket, but they don't make them anymore. You can get them for about $300 through Filson's custom shop or look for one on e-bay. I found mine for $35 in a second hand store.

Good hunting :)

I have had many a jacket ranging from Low end cheap crap to $300+ North face/MEC stuff and i keep wearing my M-65 anyways, just feels the best and has taken any and all abuse i have given it, its not waterproof but does a good job of wicking the water away from your body. That and its cheap as hell.

Filson Tin Cloth Packer. (Style 61-TN)

All sizes.

With the wool liner, there's nothing you can't weather.

If you get one, don't tell me. I can't afford it yet. Don't want to be bitten by the green-eyed monster. (Very pleased with the cap, though).
