I am thinking of using Fireline Braid in 15 or 20 lb. test and in bright yellow with a fluoro leader for my Penn 209 Trolling outfit. Any one use this new line before? I appreciate any thoughts and advice.

never used it... google it up son! i use pro and on occasions, spider wire. braid is the shizzle for spinning rods

We're using it exclusively from now on. I love the "smoke" version (compared to the green anyway). Trolls go a bit deeper so you have to adjust your depth accordingly. We're using it for jigging and casting as well - just don't hook your fish as hard because there's almost no elasticity on this line...I broke a rod :-(

Thanks for the input, i'll be buying it and some Seaguar Fluoro Premier in 12 lb. test, doubled in case of pike. Should I use stronger test because it may snap?

I use the 14 lbs test, and the line itself never snapped; it's me who broke my rod because I pulled to hard on it! We catch pike quite a lot (no leader); sometimes the fish snaps the line but we had the same issue with mono anyways.

I love Fireline and use it exclusively fishing walleyes. You need to use a mono backing on the spool or it will slip. And it requires using a Palomar knot. It's very sensitive. I use Fireline Crystal.

A layer of mono on the spool under the braid.
Use a book and a weight or a glove to get the braid on the spool good and tight.
Mono leader (uni to uni knots or Alberto knot) will add some shock absorption and stretch.

Be careful handling the line with a big fish on or when stuck.
It will cut you like a serrated knife.
When I get hung up I'll use a glove or take a bunch of wraps around a stick to pull out of the snag.

I've fished with mono once since switching to braid.
It aint happening again :)

You can also just use a piece of tape on the spool, once you tie the line to it. I don't use mono backing on any of my reels. I have a 10 inch section of 1 inch wood dowel that I use to wrap the line when I break it. No cuts, saves, skin and gloves.

I've been using braid for a couple of years. I'm still on the fence about it. I love the lack of memory and small diameter. I wish it had a tad bit of stretch though. I've lost a couple of fish that I KNOW I would have landed if I was using mono.

There have also been times that I think I'd have had more action using mono, even if it was flourescent color. I am NOT a fan of low visibility lines. There have been many times that if I wasn't able to see my line, I wouldn't have know that a fish was on.

The mono leader doesn't add any shock absorbing qualities at all, IMO. The leader isn't long enough to have any appreciable amount of stretch to it. I do use a leader though, of low visibility mono or flourocarbon, as I think it helps with abrasion near the hook or lure. It's also not as visible as the braid.

I've found that it is harder to keep a fast rod bent on smaller fish with braid.
The Berkley Shock rods that I've been using are much slower and easier to keep bent when fighting fish.
This season I'm going to to go back to some of my older & slower rods as an experiment...

I've never used fireline before, but I hear its a decent braid.

Id say if your in doubt just grab some power pro.

just my 0.02!

Just curious what your trolling for??
have never used Fireline BRAID but use, almost exclusively, Power Pro from pitching Jigs to Shallow Walleyes to Trolling Lake Michigan for Kings...Amazing stuff.

I am trolling specifically for pike, bass, gutsy perch, etc. Really anything that bites!

I only use power pro on all my reels. I have caught bream all the up to sharks and big groupers.
