I got a survivaltopics firesteel, they are great, and there new scrapper is awesome.

I received the old RAT firesteel as a promo from Derrick of KSF and I really dig it, its very comfortable to use, you have a great handhold, plus the compartment is great to put some petroleum jelly cotton bals or whatever tinder you find.

Seriously both firesteels preform about the same but my advice would be the RAT cutlery one, its easier to use (especially with gloves on) and the ability to put tinder in a sealed compartment is a great advantage, definitely worth the bucks.

I have tried lots of firesteel and all of them that had handles, either broke or unglued itself, that is all except the RAT one because theirs is kept in place by a screw. The firesteels with no handles work great but I find that I can't use gloves with them.

My best setup I found is a RAT Cutlery firesteel filled up with Petroleum jelly cotton balls with a firesteel.com scraper attached to it.

I got a striker from Scott Gossman and a ferrorod and made my own:

I got at RAT fire kit from KnivesShipFree and it is nice to be able to store some tinder in the handle.

Works like a champ guys. Scott's striker is very stiff and works well with misch metal rods too. Ferro rod is epoxied into the antler. Dead simple to make.

Sorry I can't remember where I got the ferro-rod, but it was off the net. There are several sources, e.g. Going Gear or Ben's Backwoods. Going gear sell misch metal rods which in my experience are harder to use but produce globs of burning metal that will light anything short of granite rock on fire. Ben's Backwoods carries ferrocerium rods: easier to use and will fire up good tinder easily.
