BM 42 or Microtech Tachyon? Or something else? I've read many theories here and like the one that says to get a knife you can grow into like the BM 42. Please help a novice.

Actually, I handled a MT Tachyon for my first time the other day, and was VERY VERY impressed. Never realized just how badly I need one of these things until I picked one up at the local knife shop. That having been said though, the Benchmades are ALWAYS a solid value, and right now it looks like there MIGHT be a few available for $90.00 or so each http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=187908

besides being a STEAL if they're still available, it's also nice to have a lower level of monetary commitment when you're buying the first one.

In summary, yeah...the Microtech is probably a better knife altogether, but a Benchmade is a solid value, and definitely priced right.

Please bear to mind though that I've only been playing with Balisongs for a couple months myself, so....my perception could be a bit askew (often times is) :D

have a good 'un!

.....since you haven't been into balisongs for a very long time, but the Tachyons, as sweet as they are, seem to have the blades mounted randomly to either handle. That is to say, if you just pick one up and swing with taking notice as to which handle the blade is on, you could get a nasty cut. I did. :o

If your intereste is flipping, get the 42. The handles are bigger and rounder. If you are interested in solid utility, get the Tachyon. The small size of the Tachy makes it easier to use, and the blade cuts very well.

Get a BM 43. Same as the 42, but better. Don't ask me why, it just is.

For a first knife something wth less monetary value wold probably be better. Hate to pay $200 for a tachyon you may drop. But overall I beleive the Tachyon is the finest one.

You won't be dissapointed with a BM 42.
I'd get that as your first.
Then you will be thoroughly hooked.

If you want a good quality knife to flip, get the 42 or 43, which ever blade style you like. If you want something in a great quality carry size that is awsome, scary sharp, and very nice looking, get the Tachyon. But actually, you need one of each.
