I am interested in buying a custum folder. This will be my first custom knifes, and was thinking of getting a damascus blade with damascus bolsters, and stag scales. I would like to try to keep the price as close to $500 as possible. Can anyone recommend me a good custom maker that would help me? Also any other recommendations about my first custom folder purchase would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Art Washburn makes the most gorgeous damascus bladed and bolstered folders I've seen. His prices are excellent! I have his web site in my favorites file and can go there but I cannot figure out the address because of these stinking popup pages. I can email you the link if you'ld like.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

One BF member recently had a Washburn folder in damascus and stag made recently which turned out great. Sorry, I couldn't find the actual post, but Art's website is at: www.adwcustomknives.com

Another maker you might want to try is Keith Coleman who makes some great folders at a reasonable price. I have a slightly modified version of his CFII folders on order, due in April 2001. His website is at: http://www.colemanmade.com/

I have to agree with the makers previously mentioned. I have purchased 2 folders from Keith and both were excellent. I have another due (Banshee model) for April delivery. With, guess what? Raindrop damascus blade, mosaic bolsters and stag scales. Even with extras like a fileworked damascus backspacer and scalloped, jeweled and anodized Ti liners it comes in under your limit. Great gentleman to work with as well.

As far as Mr. Washburn is concerned, I have been looking at his site and dreaming up a nice slim gentleman's knife but have not had much luck deciding.

Erik, I recently had a thread with the same Topic.
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum64/HTML/000638.html

It's the whole story start to finish on my first custom folder project. I decided to go with Art Washburn, although Keith Coleman was on my short list of possible makers. Why Art? First of all Art is a member here, and a very well respected talent around these parts. I had realtime feedback from Art on BF's Chat. When I first asked him if he was interested in the project and he said yes, I sent him my drawings, within minutes Art came back with his own ideas. You can see from the thread he kept me up to date with pics on how the knife was progressing, which I have to tell you was really exciting.

The final result was not only just what I imagined as far as looks go, but the execution, fit, finish, and action exceeded all my expectations. You would not believe how fast and smooth this knife is?

If you're in NYC and want to see and handle my knife drop me an E-mail, you can come up to my office and see mine? It's my EDC.
