Hey guys,

I've got a custom folder in D2 on the way... I really liked the design so I didn't really stop to think about the steel used... but in hindsight I'm wondering if I shoulda given it more thought.

To be honest I'm pretty ignorant about D2. I had one knife in this steel - a Benchmade Bali - some time ago and that's it.

What do people here feel about it? I hear it doesn't really take an edge that well. Does this depend on the heat treat?

What's the general feeling on D2 in a custom? Good, bad or indifferent? :D

Thanks

Others may have differing opinions but as long as the heat treat is done well I think D2 is a great steel for a using knife. I have used it for a long time and I think it's a tough all around good steel. Some people complain about it being harder to sharpen than other steels but I haven't had this problem myself.

If you're not sharpening at 7 degrees per side, you'll be fine. If you sharpen at the 15-20 degrees per side that most everyone does, you'll get D2 as sharp as every other steel. Depending on what you use for sharpening, it may take longer, but it'll still get there and stay there for a long time. D2 is a great steel if you're cutting rough or dirty material (carpet, hides, used rope) and I haven't heard complaints about it with cardboard, plastic, or foods, either.

Well, I pretty much use a Sharpmaker on all my knives, as well as stropping on leather and the back of an exercise pad...

Works pretty well on the steels I have, which includes S30V, 154CM, BG-42, VG-10, San Mai and 0-1 currently.

It is not really stainless. It does not stain like 1095, but D2 will take on a patina after awhile. However, it pits more than other carbon or stainless steels. Be careful around things like pickle juice.

D-2 is a really good steel when properly heat treated. It's not that hard to sharpen and you can get it really sharp.
