First Folder

I've recently been looking into getting a good quality small folder for general usage.

It has to be small enough to fit into my pockets (4 inches closed MAX) and the blade will have to be under 3 inches.

I really like the look of most Spyderco's (especially the cricket) but I don't want to limit myself.

Most importantly, I want something that will stand up to being carried daily and a blade that will hold an edge.

Need advice. Thanks.

If you like the cricket, why not get the cricket? Or, if you want a more conventional blade, the Dragonfly. Both are good first folders.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

You're sure to be able to find a Spyderco that fills your requirements. But think twice about a Cricket. It is a great little knife, and for some specific tasks, fine. The shape is not the best grip for extended use or applying any force.

If you can find a Q (out of production and not often found even on the sale forums) you'll have a weird little knife that works hard and won't bother most non-knife people because they won't even know what it is before you put it back in your pocket.

The Cricket is a great choice. Otherwise from Spyderco, the Wegner Mouse, Navigator and Dragonfly, as mentioned are all brilliant small knives. The Salsa is also excellent albeit a little bigger.

I'd suggest taking a look at the Spyderco Pro Grip lightweight. A very good all-around blade shape. The Delica is a good one too.

Hard to beat the Delica for overall utility. It's not the flashiest or prettiest knife out there, but they work great, are very sturdy, and are well priced. I bought my mom a Cricket a while ago, and I wasn't impressed by it. The liner-lock is paper thin not at all sturdy. For office use, it is okay, but for anything more rugged than slitting open boxes, I would stay away from it.

Spyderco has several to choose from. The Delica, Dragonfly, Navigator, Pro-Grip, and Slasa among others.
Camillus' EDC is also an excellent choice.
Good luck in your search.

Paul

Welcome!

I'd also tend to go with either the Delica or the CUDA in 154CM. My favorite would have to be the CUDA. In 154CM, it's a real bargain. It can also be had in D2 or Talonite at a higher price level.

Mate, for a first folder it's hard to beat a Scharade stockman.

Yeah, I know not a bit of toy factor that the one handers have but
for a newby to knives it's got all the the right stuff. Small, easy to
sharpen, non- threating, about $10 at wally world, and will do 99%
of everything you'll need cut in day, all while teachin' you what the
three basic blade shapes are for.

Whatever you buy keep it simple and as common as possible.

Grab a Kershaw small Vapor. These knives are awesome and should only set you back about $30. Blade steel is equal to the standard EDC fare. I actually prefer the Kershaw and Outdoor Edge Paragee over the EDC for some reason. All three are excellent for the money.

Some of the following are excellent knives and I own them all...

1. Camillus EDC 154C
2. Delica
3. Spyderco 'Q'
4. Benchmade Mini AFCK in M2
5. Small Benza! (if you want to get it right first time...):)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm still deciding, and trying to find the cheapest prices online.

One more question:

What's a 'benza'? I've been searching, and no search engine finds that maker... Thanks

It's short for Sebenza, by Chris Reeve Knives.

The Sebenza is a little on the expensive side, but if you want the best.....

A little on the expensive side? Wow... If $300-$450 is a little on the expensive side, I don't want to know what flat-out expensive is...

I'm on a college student's budget, so thanks but no thanks. I'll stick to knifes that I won't mind getting a little beat-up. :)

Another vote for the Spyderco Delica. Perfect for EDC. Not too small, but big enough for your cutting tasks. (3" blade):D

The Camillus EDC in Talonite (Thank you Larry). Been carrying it and using it everyday and it's one heck of a knife for the money....................Ira
