First Grinder?

I am a novice knifemaker [read: never made one] who is looking to buy a grinder very soon. I don't want to go overkill but at the same time I don't want to struggle with a grinder that is working more against me than with me.
Also, is there a grind style that lends itself most to a beginner? I am thinking of flat grinding small blades for a first go. Any suggestions on either the grinder or the grind style would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

My first grinder, and the one I am still using to this day, was a 12" Nicholson bastard file. Works great, especially for the type f knives you are talking about, and the best thing is that this grinder only cost me about $8! Seriously, though, you can flat grind by draw filing with a bastard file, but I do all my knives with convex edges. Filing knives is not that hard once you get the hang of it and learn how to work economically. I;m sure using a real grinder would reduce my work time in half, but there is some satisfaction to doing it all by hand.

Chiro,

ya' know, I never really thought of that. I checked out you site and was inspired by what you have accomplished. I think I'll try my hand at the file method and see what happens.

In the meantime any suggestions would still be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

i made my first few with files. its a great way to have some fun and see if knifemaking is something you want to put some money into, ive been a full time marker for over two years now and love it. also check out the neotribal group they dont use any power tools. good luck

Thanks for the info guys. I am looking into the Coote as well as another soon to be grinder from another thread. In the meantime I am ordering files.

i recomend the coote as well. norman has been making these a long time and is a great man to deal with. it was the first real grinder i bought. find a used or cheapo motor from harbor frieght, a couple of pulleys and you can have a pro grade variable speed for under $500.oo
