Just got through with this knife and sheath. Got the blade blank off of ebay. Said it was 440C but I am kinda sceptical on the C part. Everything went alright except for the handle. It split just a hair when I was flatienng the ends of the silver dowels. I filled it with a few layers of truoil then sanded it back down. I've got more leather left so I will probably do another one.

You did well on your first. I believe the handle cracked on my first one, I learned to drill the hole a tad bigger.

Yes you can make your own blades if you have the will and desire to do so. Get a piece of steel and work it down into a blade with hand files or take the plunge and get a belt grinder.

I'm sure if you get a belt grinder you will become addicted to knifemaking like so many others here in BF.
