I am trying to make my first knife, nothing really fancy. I just want a simple design to try, and learn the basics. I was hoping that you could help me with some tips on making the knife. I have a few basic tools, hacksaw, drill, 8 inch bench grinder, files, and a power sander. I was planning on trying a stock removal knife, and would greatly appreciate any tips, or websites that might help. Thanks in advance.

Congrats Erik! Knife making is very frustrating (at first) but very rewarding as well. I would suggest that you use the search function for specific questions you have. Do a search for grinding and plunge cuts to get a lot of info on how to use your power sander.

As for designs, do a full tang knife, where you epoxy/pin two pieces of handle material to the sides of the knife handle. That will be easiest. Go to www.knives.com for a bunch on info on knife making and they have some designs there that are great for beginners (I know; I am making a bunch like one of the designs!)

Good luck.

Hello, I too recently began making knives using stock removal. I only had a minimum amount of tools. I've found a local blade maker who has helped me considerably since he has a full fledged knife shop. I've documented my process at my web page. You can see it at http://www.derekmelton.com/knife.cfm

I started with 0-1 1/8x1x8 thats 4 "for the handle and 4 for the blade .i did my first with a file then finished to 400 grit.chech on heat treating book.its pretty basic and easy
