I'm new to blades. I am thinking of getting a good first quality knife around $50-$100 Canadian.

What's a good knife to buy for a first knife. I am looking for a legal one, where I can carry around Canada(BC) as a utility kinda thing. One where i can also use for camping i guess. I'm thinking of purchasing one from http://www.houseofknives.ca/ . Still not sure which one. I dont have much experience or knowledge. Any help please?

I can see about 200 of the usual replies ....

Let me give you a quick pre summary:

Have a look at anything by Spyderco, Benchmade or Kershaw. Pick the one that looks about right to you, as far as size, shape and appeal go, and buy it.
After you have used it for a while you will come to realise that you'd like something a little different in some way. Look around for that and buy it.

The point being that for a first knife any of the above mentioned makers produce a high quality, value for money knife.

You have a long career of knife buying ahead of you, enjoy! :)

BTW, here is another very good online store: www.newgraham.com

hes right, it all depends on the "feel" of the knife. your best bet would be to go to a gun show (if there is any in canada). at a gunshow you can handle alot of diffrent knives. but dont buy the first thing you see, something that might seem like a good knife to you at first will feel like a toy after you hold a quality knife.

KaBar, Canada is gun friendly. Go handle a bunch and get something you like from a reputable make. Don't worry about steel

Go to Spyderco's web site Spyderco and get a Calypso Jr. For the price you can't go wrong as a first knife. After that, hang on to your wallet!

The most important thing is what are you going to use the knife for? Do you need a knife for opening boxes at work? If so you don't need a big fixed blade, or a "tactical" folder. My first knife was an old Buck 110.

It also depends on whether your intention is to collect, or to have just a good working knife. If you want to collect, then the knives you'll look at are different. I collect a little, but most of my knives get used, so I don't really care for expensive custom pieces.

Find a knife that's gonna work for you... handle as many as you can.

Dude,

You can get lots of pretty knives, in all price ranges and purposes. Look at a Victorinox catalog ASAP, and find one to suit your needs. They are so inexpensive that you can lose your first one, and buy another for the same cost as a beginner blade from Spyderco or Benchmade, and you will use it a lot more.

Good Luck, and Best Regards,

it's hard to beat a Swiss Army. In the office, working on the car, camping, you name it. Here's my recommendation, go to NewGrahamKnives and order a KaBar folder for $20US, and a Swiss Army for $20-30US. Two best buys. You can upgrade later if you want but you wont HAVE to. Then check out RagweedForge, pick up a Mora for $10US and a Wetterling hatchet $30-40US. With those four things there's very little you couldn't do. You could spend a lot more money and be worse equipped. Welcome.

I am going to second the suggestion for the Calypso Jr. from Spyderco (which I believe is still on sale for $35 including shipping from the Spyderco factory store).

It is a great knife to introduce you to what quality in a folding knife means: thinly ground blade provides unparalleled slicing ability, blade shape is extremely useful and unintimidating, great ergonomics, wonderful lockup...and very very affordable.

Pick one up, sell it if you need to.
