This is a throwing spike I just made from O1 tool steel, for the 2001 World knife throwing championship in Phoenix next week. 12" long, 1/2" round stock. Free hand grind. (Balanced on an 1/8" drill bit)
I plan on blueing these. I need to know how to get a reliable 45-50rc on this steel if someone knows

Dude that is awesome. One of the sweetest looking spikes Ive ever seen. Free hand grind?! Looks like it came off of a lathe. Okay Im done drooling. One suggestion though. The little thing/bump/ball on the end. I see this possibly causing problems with a full turn throw. Personally like a plain rounded end for a smooth release. Then again the 1/2 turn throws are my favs so I dont no if its that big of a deal. Atleast not to me. Any thoughts on a double ended one? That would be really cool. Did any of that make sense? Probably not. Okay one last question and Ill go away. Are you planning on making these a standard item? If so any idea on a price? Yea I know thats two questions.

Thanks for the comments
The cuts on my hand from running them into the grinder will attest that YES these are completely freehand ground. (Don't own a lathe)
In order to get the balance where it is I need to take enough off the handle end. I could try and make the handle end curve up into the knob. So a release from the handle will not hang up. That will take some experimentation.
Will they be a standard Item for me

not sure yet.
It will be based on the responce I get from the show and from my fellow Forumites!!!

Suggest some other steel options, MUST be available in round bar stock.

I will keep you posted on the progress.

Hi

Being O1 you should be able to harden it and then draw it back to the right temper by heating it in an oven to a peacock blue color and then quench in 10/30 weight oil
Remember to be facing north when doing this or the thing will warp.

Also quench outside or you risk a fire

Question, you have a bunch of knives on your album. Dont you already know how to temper?

Take care

Will you stop it! I already have a wish list a mile long and your making it worse.

Any body know what a kidney is going for these days? I think you only need one. That thing is a whole lot better than those cheap stainless steal OSS daggers you see at all the flea markets. I know the people on the thrower list would fall in love with both of them. Really great work.

oops... Double tap.

Quite snazzy! Sure beats my Sears landscape-timber spikes. Of course, they're only 1.69 apiece....

Why yes I do know how to temper!
I also know there are people who know far more about Metalurgy than I do.
So it doesn't hurt to get as much input as possible.
I won't put anything up for sale unless it is tested by others and does what it is designed to do, in an exceptional way.

I believe if you are going to pay for a Custom anything it better outperform the price you ask. Period.

I will post the results of testing on these (Good or bad) after the competition next.
