hey all,
Over the weekend my 11 year old finally held on to enough cash:D to buy his first knife, he decided on a Victorinox Hiker and it came with a bonus sheep foot one blade knife (like a gardener), he couldnt be happier!
Nice knives, excellent fit and finish!
I Wanted to pick him up a sheath, so where do you guys get your SAK stuff? I was just going to order him a black nylon job from SMKW, since im unsure how long it will last before its lost or destroyed:D any suggestions.
thanks!
ivan

I think he made a great choice! The hiker along with the camper are some of my favorites, good carring size and most of the tools you really need.

I get almost all of my vic stuff from felinevet shop and SMKW.I think the small Vic sheath will work just fine,4.49 at smkw.

Outstanding! I was twelve when I bought my first knife with my own money. It was a Victorinox Huntsman back in 1983. I still have it, and although a little rough looking, it's still perfectly functional.

thank you guys! He is one happy guy, always looking for an opportunity to use it, i let him open my old Camillus#23 Cigar Jack that came yesterday, gotta kick outta watching him cutting on the box, trying to decide if he should use the blade and slice the tape or maybe just saw through it:D Didnt matter to me as long as my old camillus didnt get dinged:)
thanks

SMKW has a great price for the nylon Vic pouches, but shipping costs may make it a tad expensive (5.00 to 7.00 on top of the cost of a pouch). You may try Tim at Felinevet on sosakonline.com. He may have a great deal on some pouches for you. Hope this helps.

The Victorinox Hiker is a great knife for a kid...or an adult. It's my favorite non-alox SAK.

It sound like you're having as much fun watching him, as he is using it. Good for both of you!

Good choice. Just be sure that he keeps it hidden if he's going to carry it with him to school. You wouldn't want him to be arrested for "bringing a weapon to school" in this insane zero-tolerance society we now live in.

If his school district has a zero tolerance for knives, the boy shouldn't bring it to school at all. Why let a child be exposed to a messy legal situation?

No the agreement is that he is never to take it to school, automatic expulsion and im sure a lengthy and costly legal tangle, we dont need that ive read the horror stories. Nope the sheath isnt necessary but he is 11 and he thinks he needs one for when we are outside, in the woods or plinking targets.:D

Not to steal the thread or anything, but with the right guidance and teaching to your son, that SAK will be a treasure to him 20 or 30 years from now when he's teaching his son how to properly use and sharpen a knife. Good on you for being a good daddy!
