Fish knives

This is a pattern that has seen a revival in the past few years. One nice thing about them them right now is that you can pick up vintage knives in excellent condition for about the same price as the new modern version. There were a wealth of makers of this pattern years ago which gives more options in makers and blade steels than is being offered today. This old Ka Bar is one of my favorites...

Thanks for the tip, Absintheur. Do all of them have the long second bolster like toothpicks?

Not all.

This one, a Schrade Walden "Old Lunker" has a shadow pattern with Staglon handles, a brass bail. It does have the cap lifter on the scaler, which was a common feature, and the hook remover. Some manufacturers have hook sharpeners, and rulers on the blades.

There are alot of vintage "cheap" fishing knives as well, Imperial, Colonial, Sabre, to name a few. Alot of these are available on ebay every day.

I've seen Kabar, Camillus, Schrade, Robeson and Case fishing knives also. These pop up on ebay from time to time, but are not always available.

Not sure about the others, but I belive the Case Fishing knife is a regular production item. At least, its currently listed in their on-line catalog.

Interesting. I just started a search for a solid yellow Hammer brand fish knife yesterday. A gift idea for a friend from Alabama (the Yellowhammer State). No luck so far. I would have sworn that was a common style/color, but all I'm seeing is "cracked ice" or what several are calling imitation mother of pearl.

Was solid yellow ever a choice, or am I nuts?

WOW, just wow. I've been drooling over this pattern for a while. I live on a river three miles from the beach so fishing is important.
That is the finest looking example I've seen so far.

Steve:

Schrade Walden made some in yellow cell handles, with a sharpener shield, and a ruled scaler. Higher end example. PM me and I'll give you some more information. The Hammers and Imperial Jackmasters have low end handles. Ulster made fish knives are likely similar to Schrade Walden too.

The imitation pearl is often referred to as MOTS (Mother of Toilet Seat), sometimes cracked ice. The nice solid imitation pearl with Schrade was called Marine Pearl.
