Fixed Blade Manix Proposition

Lately I've been searching for a reasonably sized fixed blade for EDC. I've looked at several manufacturers trying to find the right combination of blade length, handle shape/material, and quality steel. I've found a few that were pretty close, but none that were exactly what I was looking for.

The Manix, IMO, would be a perfect fixed EDC. It's about the right size, has perfectly textured G-10 and there's not much better than S30V. Also, it's the only knife I've ever used that feels like it's gripping me back. I know I'm not alone on thinking it's an extremely comfortable knife. The main complaint I've seen so far (other than early clip-screw problems) is that some think it's too big for a folder. I can see the reasoning behind that, it takes up a lot of pocket space, but would anyone feel the same way if it were a fixed blade?

We all know that Sal and Spyderco will make ideas into realities if there is enough customer interest behind it. So, if you're like me and are looking for a good EDC fixed blade, let them know it. If you have any suggestions or tweaks I'd like to hear them too.

Ezekiel

Here is a crudely altered pic in Photoshop :D

You gotta ditch the hole. :)

what about the temperance?

(not to scale, i just grabed a couple of pics.)

A FB Manix w/out hole would satisfy most of my requirements (in another recent thread) for a fixed blade for carry on gear for military boys...

'Cept for price. :( Joe can't afford to pay $100+ for a knife that will get beat up in the field.

That's what I thought when I saw this. Nice blade.

If you really want a FB version, there are makers out there who can do a custom for you- some may think it to be heresy or a ripoff- but add your own tweak & don't put it into production ;) . I have a FB version of the Lum Chinese folder done by our own Chiro 75- kick ass knife. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=305843&highlight=lum

K.V. Collucci - You gotta ditch the hole.

I kinda like the hole. Maybe a circular indentation instead?

jestyr - what about the temperance?

I've thought about the Temperance, but it's lacking the finger choil and G10. You just have to hold the Manix to appreciate its ergonomics; it's really comfortable in the hand.

Perhaps Spyderco could offer a discount for Military/LEO like other companies do?

Chiro75 definitely does some nice work. I’ve already spoken with Sal about doing what you did; he said it wouldn’t be a problem. It just feels wrong to ask another knife maker to copy another's design when he already has his own style. I may have to do that though, the interest in this is lower than I expected. It seems odd too, especially since I’ve seen more posts lately about a more substantial FB from Spyderco. Seems like the Manix would be a good candidate to me.

Hey there Eziekiel-
I see your point as to asking another maker about doing something that outside of his 'style'. Steve (Chiro) had already expressed an interest in the design & was willing to do the knife- having earlier had Mad Poet (The late Mel Sorg) do up a blade in that design that Steve finished. I already had some of Steve's work & the Chinese leaf pattern looked like something he'd lend his hand to well. The end result is a very nice knife. I didn't want an exact clone- I added the finger cut-out, it adds a bunch to the utility of the knife- you really get it snugged up into the hand & don't have to worry about your hand slipping forward onto the blade.

Rugger,

It is awful purty. I think I might like it better than the original- but, I reckon that *should* be the case with custom knives!

John

Thanx John.
Yes, a custom *should* be a "cut above" (man, couldn't resist the bad pun- sorry) a production knife- but it's even more so impressive when the bar is set pretty damned high w/ a Lum design & Spyderco execution...
But man- Gotta tell ya- Steve (Chiro75) knocked this one so far out of the park, all I did was just sit & grin like a drooling idiot when I took her out of the sheath.
And he's doing it w/ files & a Dremel. He's gonna be seriously dangerous (to my checking account especially) someday when he gets behind a Bader or something.

I think sal should come up with some idea to preserve the spyderco pattern on fixed blades without putting an useless hole on the blades.
Maybe a laser engraved round spyder on both sides?

Hi Spectre. I'm working with the 82nd on a fixed blade for them. The Jumpmasters are the design team. Something might come out of that would work for you.

The Fixed Temperance is what I carry in the "bush".

Uh oh Sal, I don't think you should have let that cat out of the bag. You realize you will be "harassed" for months on end about pics and release dates.... :D
