Granted we are all knife knuts here. Each of us seems to have some deep seated 'need' to have a blade with us at all times for whatever 'reasons' or scenarios we can conjour, but WHY must we push all sensible limits and risk arrest, fines, confiscation  or denial of entry or service?
Many people survive every day in extreme conditions and worst case scenarios and do well EVEN WITHOUT A KNIFE! Perhaps 1 of 10 may have done marginally better if one was available.
We have a denigrating name for them: sheeple, and sneer at others because we are knife-carrying Sneetches and they are not and the worst is that somehow we think we are not a man without our sharper-shinier-than-everyone-else's penis substitute.

Without the 'What ifs', does it really HURT you to be somewhere without a knife?

everyone comes from different backgrounds and cultures, some of which you may not be familiar with yourself... besides it's totally up to an individual whatever the hell he wants to carry and where.

I guess it is just a case of not wanting to get caught without adequate tools for a situation, even if they are minimal/marginal for that situation.

Any knife can be a life saver. No knife can cost a life.

Personally I feel nekkid without some cutlery on me. Guess it all started when we came face to face with a car flyingthru the air towards us, which landed on its top. People were stuck in their seat belts. I had no blade. Luckily someone did, and was able to cut the seatbelts and get the folks out before the fire started. That was when I started carrying something full time.

Have ever since.

I don't use the word "sheeple", Merek. The only thing that bothers me about non-knife people is when they try to tell me what to do with my knives, based on their experiences of not carrying one themselves. Other than that I could care less if people choose not to carry a knife.

The only reason why I carry a knife is because its useful to me, just like my shoes, wallet, writing instruments, keys, hat, and roll of duct tape- these are all items that I have a reasonable expectation of needing at some time during a typical day. I don't carry many other things, such as an electric blender, or a golf club, or a pack of cigarettes, for exactly the opposite reason.

Yes people do manage "survival" situations without knives. And people manage these situations sometimes without guns, or means to make a fire and shelter, or even missing functional limbs. That being said, wouldn't you all rather have at least one of the above with you?

EDIT: I think most of us are mature enough to understand that a knife is not a penis substitute. Its all about function.

I concur.

I carry a knife because I don't like opeing bags with my teeth, or sawing through packages with my car keys.

I also wear a wristwatch every day. Do I do this because I "need" one or could not survive without it? Of course not, I do it because I find it more convenient to be with one than to be without.

I wish I had kept a count of the number of people who have asked to borrow a knife from me over the years. I'm sure that they would have "survived" without it, but clearly at the time they were asking for one they found it to be decidedly more convenient to have a knife than to not have one.

Example: You leave you knife at home Mon thru Thurs. On Friday, knowing you will need to cut somthing you bring your knife. After helping people by cutting stuff, they question you about carrying a knife.

If you carry everyday, they get use to it. After alot of little actions they see your point. When you help them at unexpected moments, they start to understand.

People stopped asking me "Why do you carry a knife?" after I started to carry two knives. They then asked "Why do you carry TWO knives?" Less having to justify myself.

They are not stupid fo rnot having knives, they are stupid for not thinking for themselves.

Oh no! Pointy object! BAAADDDDD! :grumpy:

My main question was "but WHY must we push all sensible limits and risk arrest, fines, confiscation or denial of entry or service?"
You know, the how do I sneak one here and how can I hide one there and the security screeners have IQs somewhat less than gophers and my sword cane is well hidden and can I make a knife using a banana and a paperclip kinda questions some people insist on asking because by God it is their freaking right as a tax paying citizen of this free country to carry whatever wherever despite the rules that they well know.
I am as guily as anyone and secretly thrill when I beat the rules and am indignant when I am caught. Apologize for ranting. :footinmou

Because I hate random people making up rules for no good reason that tell me how to run my life?

Because simply by being discreet and responsible I can get away with breaking those rules WITHOUT needing to seriously risk "arrest, fines, confiscation or denial of entry or service?"

"Sheeple" are not just people who don't carry knives (or firearms, or whatever). There's plenty of those around, and they're mostly OK. If they don't want to carry a knife, they don't have to. That's their choice, and I have no problem with that. I choose to, because (amongst other reasons) I find it useful in daily life, and necessary at work. Could I survive daily life without a knife? Probably, but with more difficulty. Do people who don't carry knives survive daily life? Obviously. Could they benifit from carrying a knife? Probably yes. I'd benifit as well, since I wouldn't have to lend everybody else my knife.

"Sheeple" however are loathesome individuals who think their fragile illusion of safety is shattered by someone (legally) carrying a knife. You know, the kind of person who freaks out gasping "oh my god, he's got a knife" when you pull out a Swiss Army Knife to cut a coupon out. Or asks "why do you carry a knife?" when you're cutting boxes right in front of them. Or says "who you going to kill with that thing?" when you're trimming a loose thread. Or exclaims "that thing's illegal" when you know perfectly well that it isn't.

The kind of person who judges you as a criminal or maniac without knowing you, or even worse, after they've known you as a perfectly rational person until they found out you carry a knife.

I pretty much don't do anything your post says....other than carry a knife.

I don't care if other people don't carry. I just don't want them to freak out if I carry. If they do freak out and I have a legal length blade on me then too bad for them.

I just like knives and have an admiration for the craftsmanship and utility form that they have.

I don't call anyone sheeple. In fact I had never heard that term before coming here. I had to go look up the term in the dictionary.

Fun Fun,
Fisher of Men :)

Of course people survive everyday without carrying a knife, but 70% of them do it by bumming a blade off someone who does carry one.

Seriously, I carry a knife because in my state I can’t carry a firearm concealed, I figure a knife is a better defensive weapon than nothing at all.

I also carry a knife because in my day to day life I need to open boxes and cut stuff each and every day, if the knife is in my pocket I won’t spend 5 minutes looking all over for something to cut with.

I realize that the odds of my ever needing a defensive weapon are slim (and that's fine with me), but if something does happen I’ve at least taken some responsibility for my own defense…….something the “sheeple” depend on government to do for them.

I was a Boyscout, "Be Prepared" is the motto. I carry a knife for the same reason I keep insurance on my car and house. You never know when you will need it. Same reason I keep a gun handy. Better to have one and not need it, then need it and not have it. I know that I will need it at some point, you just never know when.

Also, my carrying of knives and guns are completely legal, I have a license for a concealed handgun and I only carry knives that are legal in my state so I'm not risking arrest, fines, confiscation, etc...

It hurts to be without a knife when I might need one. It's kind of like opening a disposable camera so that you can get a free battery and getting hit by the flash circuit.

Seriously take a look at where i live!,I live in the UK and carrying and caught with a whopping 3.1" of steel  with a locking mechanism will have you a night in the local cells and £50+ fine with the worst case scenario ending up in a court appearance.

Anybody can carry or not carry anything they want. If you do not know the consequences for what you carry then you made your own lunch. If you get caught when you know that laws are being bent or broke that is your fault also. The one thing we all need to keep in mind is the "big picture" consequences. Whenever anyone faces legal actions for their choice of carry it adds fuel to the fires of the Anti's. We don't want to end up like many other countries who have stripped the populace of their legal self defense. I know as we all do that there will always be circumstances where preservation of family or self outweighs all other aspects.
Simply, carry lawfully and responsibly.
Oh Merek, that thing about the penis, sounds like a personal problem dude. Get over it, LOL

I don't really try to sneak them around. If they're not allowed, I won't bring them. But I like to have them because they're the most useful tool on earth. I won't die without them, but I'd just have to find something else to collect. I admit it, there's something more about knives that I enjoy, but I don't really know what it is.
