The last time I flew for a trip was before I started even collecting knives, so obviously I need to be brought up to speed. The search function seemed to be down and I didn't find anything too helpful in the last year's worth of threads so I'm posting this here. What exactly is the protocol for knives in baggage? I read a bit about locking or zipping in other posts, but nothing really explaining what happens.

I'll be in the area around Anaheim so any information about county or city restrictions would be helpful as well.

Bumping this. About a week and a half before my trip and I'd really like information about this.

Simon,

As long as you put your knives in your checked luggage, you should not have a problem with the airlines. They will x-ray your checked luggage and they have the right to open the checked luggage and do a physical search of it. Do not lock your luggage with anything that can't be removed. They will cut off padlocks or anything else they can't easily remove. I think some people use zip ties for safety and security. I just tie my luggae shut with a airline name tag. In Atlanta, you can watch them x-ray your luggage so you can know if they open your bags. I think many people have a concern that if their bags are opened in some secret place, theft becomes an overwhelming temptation.

Do not try to take any knives or sharp objects through as hand luggage. If you forget and keep something on your person, they will react in one of two ways. The worst is that they will arrest you. These people were not hired for their sense of humor or discretion. Most likely they will give you the chance to either throw the knife away or, if you have a self addressed stamped envelope, they will let you mail the knife to your home address.

I stopped carrying anything sharp. I even stopped carrying my pocket stapler because it gives a suspicious shadow on the x-ray machine. I fly back and forth the New Orleans on a weekly basis, so anything I can do to speed up the security process helps. The good news is that the security process gave me an excuse to by some knives that I leave in New Orleans.

Good luck with your travel. My best advice - buy a knife where you are going and then mail it home to yourself when you are ready to return.

Look, going near an airport with a knife is just bad news. I'm not aware if you can have it in checked baggage, probably can, i would call the airport and ask them straight up.

If you're going somewhere to buy knives, before you depart CA. simply throw all your purchases into a FedEx box and mail them home via "Ground saver" which should only run about $7-$15.

Worth it, IMO, to save hassles, confiscations, and possible thefts, since i guess you can no longer lock baggage.

If you mean departing from home, and taking blades with you... don't be silly, just buy one when ya get there and mail it back before ya leave.

friggin homeland defense in the land of the free, means we need to think in depth or face jail time because we're hobbyists. How threatening!

Good luck dude, and have a great trip!

Wow dude, Great timing! :D

BTW, because of the airlines cruel/insensitive/dehumanizing/humiliating treatment of women, kids, and seniors, i will not fly. no matter what, i will not fly. There's something seriously wrong with the system right now and i will not pay to support it. Far as i'm concerned, i hope they all go bankrupt.
