Hi All:

I have carried a pocket knife for years, but am just getting the collecting bug. I can see myself purchasing several Case knives in the future! My question (for most of you that have many knives) is do you rotate them as users or keep them new? Thanks,

Kevin

Hello and welcome.

You're going to get many different answers to your question for many different reasons. :)

Some people here maintain a small collection of users that they rotate through. Others are prolific collectors keeping many of their purchases mint to preserve value. Some are something in between.

I consider myself to be an accumulator. :)
I don't follow any specific self-imposed rules when it comes to what I buy....keep....use....or don't use. I just do what makes me happy at the time.

I use all my knives as users. Many have a couple users and many safe queens. SOme have one users and the rest safe queens and some have all safe queens.

I collect because I love knives and love to use them. I sometimes sell or trade knives that dont workout for me but generally, I keep em. I dont buy knives as an investment as there is much easier ways to make money.

You cant take em with you when you pass on, so you might as well enjoy them in good health IMO. Your children wont care for the ones you have in the safe. They will care about the ones you used :) YMMV

Constant rotation. I feel myself switching between pocket knives all the time. After all, what's the point in picking up a new knife if you don't plan on using it? The only knife that seems to stay in my pocket these days is a Schrade 33OT. I'll sometimes bring another knife with me, but that 33OT has been set for a good while now. Something nice about 1095 and developing a patina.

I think it depends on the knife. For the most part, I rotate what I have, but I do have some knives that are just stored & fondled some (Including some slippies).

However, I have far more users than safe queens. Personally, I've finally got enough slippies to rotate one per day for over a week now. That group of slippies includes a few customs & one of the BFC knives (The '07 CSC Cannitler). I plan on putting the new '09 Barlow into the rotation, too.

Some Cases (Many, actually) seem to be made for collecting. I guess it just depends on what you want. I usually find it hard to have safe queens. If I don't use/carry it, I find myself trying to trade it for something I'll use.

Good luck with your collection.

Excellent answer, T. The only problem I have is that I have too many, so couldn't possibly use them all, or my favorites would have too long to wait in the rotation. I switch between about 5-6, and the rest are safe queens.

some of the knives in my "collection" see more pocket time than others, but they are almost all "users" to some extent (the only real exception being a couple of fighting knives I have just becuase). Certainly all my Case knives have seen use either EDC or out camping.

If I buy new I get whatever catches my fancy. Old knives in a shop or yard sale, i'll get whatever I can get my hands on thats any good. I don't collect anything specific, but stockmans are my main knife of choice.

Thanks all for the great replies. Yes, I think I'll end up using most (if not all) of my knives. I like to pull it out and look at it as well as use it, and I do agree that the 'purpose' of a knife is to be used. I have a nice bone handled Case Sway Back Gent due to arrive any day now...I'll post a picture when I get it!

i carry and use all of mine from the heirloom to the gifts from christmas, even though it would be a tragedy if i lost the knife i cant help it! They were meant to be carried and admired.
NO SAFE QUEENS FOR ME!:D

Welcome to BladeForums and the Traditionals sub-forum!

I'm a relative "newbie" myself, but so far the knives I've purchased have been used and carried by me, not kept as safe queens. I've bought knives from different manufacturers: Buck, Case, GEC, Queen, Bulldog, and probably some others that I can't remember off hand.

What usually gets me interested in any particular knife is seeing comments & pictures that get posted here. I think you'll find that the people who are here in the Traditionals forum are a great bunch!

None of mine are safe queens tho, obviously, some get more pocket time than others as I have favorites. But I don't own any I wouldn't and haven't carried.

Couldn't have said it any better. My favorites change from time to time.
Variety is good though...

I use to be guilty of keeping most as safe queens, but found I get more enjoyment out of having them in pocket.

If you are just getting started, you will no doubt go through a lot of different phases. None of them are right or wrong. Just enjoy them..

YMMV

My knives, including the traditional pocketknives, are almost always added to the Accumulation and not used. If there's one that I really want to carry, I buy a duplicate. :D

Some of mine are safe queens; they're in their original boxes.

Others are out of their boxes, but I use them very sparingly - to open an envelope, etc.

Then there are the ones I carry.
