I was wondering how often do you sharpen your knives? I have an emerson that I never use.

1. The steel is 154cm and I was wondering how often should I sharpen it to keep it sharp? It is never used.
2. What should I use? Should I practice on a cheap folder first? Where do I buy the stuff? I have seen the guide on emersonknives already.
3. How many times can I sharpen a knife before I need to get a new knife?
3. Will the factory sharpen it for me?
4. Is it hard to sharpen knives? Or should I leave it to the factory?

Thanks in advance.

1. sharpen it when it gets dull, regular stropping can help
2. is it a chisel ground knife? if so, systems like the Lansky, Gatco, DMT aligner, or Sharpmaker won't be very helpful. You might want to learn how to freehand. There are many places to get sharpening supplies, and many types of abrasives to use. Practicing on a cheap knife can help.
3. a lot. a whole lot. no, really, like, a bunch.
3 (b) probably, I haven't had an Emerson, but I think all the premium production companies will. You have to consider shipping, possible fees, and wait time.
4. Not really, the actual motion is very simple. It just takes practice to become consistent in angle and pressure.
